Mileage Reimburse Badassity
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:06:10 PM »
For my job, I am at a differently client every week. My boss pays us for mileage (the difference between what it takes to get to our office compared to the distance it takes to get to the client). Every payday, my boss probably cries a little because I'm actually making money off of the mileage reimbursement....

One co-worker lives 40 minutes away from the office and was looking to buy a new house. I tried to convince him to move closer but he wouldn't listen to a word I said.. His excuse was because taxes are higher over here. However, the amount of money he must be spending between gas/car maintenance and getting zero mileage reimbursement because he lives so far away from the office would completely make up for the higher taxes.

Back to the point..While my co-workers are actually using the mileage to cover their expenses, I'm being paid for every single mile I drive because I live 2 seconds from my office. I sold my previous car for a better mileage vehicle after I started working for my company. To completely fill my tank, it's $38 currently. I fill my tank no more than once a week. Every day that I drive to a client's location, I typically average $20 in mileage.

So lets do the math:
$20 per day x 5 work days a week = $100.
$100 weekly mileage - $38 to fill my tank = $62.

Let us take this one step further:
$100 mileage per week x 50 weeks (rounding down b/c obviously I'm going to take vacations) = $5000
$38 x 50 weeks = $1900
Yearly profit: $3100.

The money I have gained makes up for all my gas, car maintenance, and even a few of my car payments.

Not bad...though the wear and tear caused by all the work driving...will add up.

The money I have gained makes up for all my gas, car maintenance, and even a few of my car payments.

But...a face punch for having car payments.
But...tell me that you bike or walk to work on the days of no client outreach...or it is spring loaded boxing gloves in the mail for you!   :-)

I actually convince my coworkers to swing by and pick me up during the winter months if we happen to be at the office (especially since this past winter was brutally cold). So no wear/tear on bike or car during those times. But the warm months I'm never there, so no chance for biking/walking.

I've already punched myself in the face a few times for car payments. At the time, it was my best option (wanted to build my credit and stop paying out $1000 every other month on my beater car which was breaking down constantly).. my car loan rate is actually lower than my student loans, so I'm working on cutting down my student loans first.

I'm a young mustache and a work in progress. I've already started adopting Mr. Mustache's attitude towards treating debt as if it's an emergency and must be paid off immediately (thus the reason for my part time job in addition to my full time job). Ramen noodles are my best friend ($0.20 dinner, yes please).

Stop with the ramen noodles! They're crap for fuel, and you're exhausting your physical resources (albeit slowly) by relying on crap like that. Take it up a notch with beans and rice, or something equally cheap - and way more nutritious!

Lol ewww beans. Next you'll be telling me to eat veggies. :p

Ramen noodles aren't so bad if you put other items in the soup. If you look at Asian diets, a lot of meals consist of ramen and rice.
