Title: McDonald's app--great deals
Post by: Pizzabrewer on July 12, 2018, 07:49:41 AM
I saw this on Doctor of Credit the other day.  Downloaded the app, they are offering some crazy good deals.

The best deal on there is $1 for pretty much any sandwich, every day.  I think that runs through September.

This must be pretty new because the person at the counter was surprised when I scanned the barcode on my phone and the price went from $5.19 to $1.00.  Not bad for a cheap lunch.

I'm not much of a McD's person but I don't mind an Egg McMuffin or a double fish filet sandwich.  The artisan grilled chicken is kinda bad but still, at a buck, it makes a cheap lunch on the go.

Yup!  I've been using the McDonalds app for a while now (~2 years).  My lunches are $2.16.  This $1 deal has been the best I've seen.  It is valid 1 per day until 9/30.  You better believe I've been eating McDonalds every day since this started (July 1). haha

Today I ordered:
$1 quarter pounder with chesse (normally $4.99)

Separate order
$1 sausage burrito
coupon for free drink

I order through mobile app, so I don't have to interact with humans or get questioned why I'm doing 2 separate orders.

Tuesdays & Thursday usually have free drink coupons (seems like a newer coupon)
Fridays are free medium fries (always been here... for at least the last year)
Free 6 pc. chicken nuggets when your major sports team wins the day before (Utah = Utah Jazz, San Diego = San Diego Padres).

I'm thinking the grilled chicken is the only sandwich I will eat from McDonald's.  Haven't had one for a couple years.  It would be worth a buck for sure.

Has anyone seen the movie supersize me? It’s about a guy who only ate McDonalds for thirty days. I will never touch McDonalds again. You can watch it for free if you have amazon prime with amazon video.

They had $1 Big Mac's all of January in Canada, I ate one every chance I could find to get over there. 520 calories for $1 beats any meal I could make.

And for the Supersize Me crowd you can try and rebuttal the faux documentary with this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Head

Eat in moderation and you'll do fine, always supersize and crush the largest things you can including desert and it doesn't matter where you eat.

Yup.  Saw it.  Doesn't apply here unless you're planning to eat every meal at McD's and order the worst possible thing every time.

And trust me, I'm no McDonald's fan.  But $1 per sandwich, carefully chosen, isn't going to harm anyone.

It's not terrible but it's certainly not great.  But, like you said, for a buck it falls squarely on the frugal and worthwhile side of the equation.

Just downloaded the app, filled out the information, and went to McDonald's.  Worked like a charm.  Straight to the pick up counter and 30 seconds later, I was walking out the door with my sandwich.  The chicken in the sandwich has a chemical taste but the bun and the lettuce and tomato were fine.  The dressing is too sweet for me.  For a dollar?  I "might" order another, but maybe I will try something else next time.  And if you have to eat right now, it's a great way of getting food into your stomach quickly.  Bonus:  I won't have to use store bought napkins for a few days, as the bag was stuffed with napkins.

Thanks for the tip!

You do know that everything at McDonalds is made from the same stuff, right?  They just put it in different molds.  Hamburg, mold 1.  Fries, mold 2.  Milkshake, right in cup.  All the same.

I don't understand. Dogfood is already cheap, why do I need an app for that?

Wow. Thanks for that. I had been using the app to skip lines etc... I didn’t pay any attention to the deals.

And agreed with “eat in moderation” and maybe skip the fries

He loaded the dice for that experiment. He always got the full meal, including beverages of soft drinks or milk shakes (sweet drinks don't register as calories with the body) AND he supersized it if the employee asked.  He forced himself to eat and drink the entire meal, whether he was hungry or not. And he quit exercising during the month.

McDonald's is not something to eat daily.  The least adulterated item on the menu is the Egg McMuffin.  When I'm traveling with no access to a kitchen, it makes a decent breakfast.  I don't think their McCafe drinks are any worse than the Starbucks drinks.  Both are made with a lot of artificial flavorings.  For two bucks for the small, it's half or less of the price at Starbucks, for something equally unhealthy.

Too bad the mobile app checkout feature gives me errors. Still can scan them scan the barcode when you get there. Really good deals. Their fish fillet sandwich is pretty good!

$1 per sandwich is too low.

I wouldn't even consider eating one for a five-digit number or even six. I doubt you could pay me enough to eat one.

But for them to pay you only a dollar seems like you're selling yourself too cheap.

MacDonalds is designed to make you addicted to MacDonalds. You know how drug dealers give drugs out for free to get people hooked? That’s this app. I’m a bit shocked that anyone would apply Mustachian thinking for super cheap food, what a bargain without working out that you’re being set up to perpetuate addictive food. And not only that, you’re promoting it, for free, to others. Them’s Some evil geniuses those McD folks. I’d hope we could be better than this.

Gross, not worth it. I had a&w coupons for free root beer, no purchase needed, and I didn't even use them because who needs it anyway. I guess it would be ok if that's all you can afford and you have no way of making anything better, but otherwise I'll pass.

I enjoy eating and preparing food, and I used look down on McDonald's food.  Over the years, I've developed an appreciation for fast food burgers.  Now when I travel, I like to look for local fast-food burger joints and try them out. The Double Cheeseburger is my favorite sandwich at McDonald's.  The cheese, pickles, onions and ketchup serve add needed moisture to a sandwich containing well-done all beef patties.  I like the hint of dill from the pickle slices combined with the bite of the onion pieces and the tang of the tomato ketchup.  The soft bun brings everything together.  There's no wow factor here,  but you're going to get the same double cheeseburger no matter where you order from.

I recently tried the new "fresh" quarter pounder sandwich, yes for $1. Surprisingly decent. You should give it a try.

Humorous side note:  there's a brand-new McDonalds in the neighborhood. It's so new the app doesn't recognize it. So the people there have to enter the app deal manually which doesn't cancel/redeem the offer in my app. Technically I could go multiple times per day and get the $1 sandwich deal.

The quality of the offers has dropped off here in Silly Valley.  $1 sandwiches are once or twice a week,  I have been curious about the new burger.  Maybe if another $1 sandwich deal pops up, I will try it.  Although the Egg McMuffin is the cheap sandwich of choice.

The app has glitches.  I mistakenly clicked on the redeem your free McCafe when I only had three.  Instead of telling me no, you don't have enough, it zeroed out the three and charged me the $2.  If you are driving somewhere where you want to eat, but are currently near another McDonalds, it insists on creating the order at that location.  Then it's impossible to get out of that order and any deal you added is lost.  So it needs cleaning up.

Ok forget for a moment about whether it is shit food, or Morgan Spurlock, or whatever.

What is really disappointing to me about a $1 meal is that somebody is getting screwed. Either the employees are not being paid fairly, or the farmers and suppliers are being squeezed, or the local small business takeaway shops get burned. Guarantee you McD's corporate profits will not take a hit.

Please don't tell me it's all "competition" and the free market at work. This is how communities die. A big corporate lowers their prices to wipe out the small business competition, and then when they are gone, Maccas goes back to business as usual.

Don't play the game.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the cost for this campaign is coming out of the advertising budget.  And let's not forget that many of the restaurants are owned by franchisees, not the corporate parent.  It's their revenue that is affected.

I don't think anybody here is claiming McD's is a virtuous company or has any illusions that the food is good (by any objective standard).  Yet here we are as a thrifty community hacking and scrimping our way to save our precious dollars.  How is buying a $1 Egg McMuffin any less ethical than opening a checking account while planning to close it as soon as the $300 bonus hits?  Than opening multiple credit cards and doing the bare minimum to get free travel to Europe?  Than clipping and trading coupons?  Than stacking cc cash back on top of shopping portal rebates on top of sale prices?  Than taking advantage of Sprint's free year of service?

And don't be so sure about the corporate profits and inevitable global domination.  McD's sales and profits have been anything but robust the past decade.  If anything these deals are an act of desperation.

I have no ethical qualms eating a $1 sandwich.  And it's not hurting the local independent sandwich shop because I never eat there anyway.  They don't fit my budget.

Does the app tell you when the ice cream machine is broken or not? Because that's my biggest reason to go to McDonald's, and the biggest reason to just walk away with not ordering anything.

You guys can be really dogmatic. Yeah, McDonalds is crap 98% of the time, but these are great deals if you are with a group or in a bind. You are rushing through the airport and need something quick and your only options are McDonalds, starbucks or What A burger. Just grab a quarter pounder and you'll be fine. Or you are on a roadtrip and the gas station is connected to the mcdonalds. Personally, i settle for mcdonalds instead of making my friends stop at another restaurant. It's edible. Get over it.

Also, I use this at least once a week. I travel a ton and $1 large ice coffee with the App at an airport is a great deal. The company pays for it either way but I like their ice coffee (no cream/sugarfree FV) and saves the company a couple bucks over the ice coffee at Starbucks.

The only options are junk food?

Even if you didn't have time to pack a snack, you have the Mustachian option of not getting anything at the airport or gas station.

A couple months ago I fasted for a day with only water, still doing my daily exercises, and felt great.

How great?

Great enough to do a three-day water-only fast and felt great too, still doing my daily exercises, no special preparation, still handled all my business as usual. There's nothing special about me. People do it all the time and have for thousands of years. Junk food is engineered not to satisfy you but to motivate you to want more.

I'm not saying anyone should fast, only that the human body can go without food for days so the option of waiting a few hours to eat is available and more frugal. "It's edible" and cheap seems low standards for putting something in one's body, though everyone's values differ.

No one has to "get over it" and eat that stuff.

McD's certainly plays hardball with suppliers and resists paying employees more than they need to but I'm pretty sure the $1 sandwiches and other promotions are loss leaders and they expect to make it up in other higher margin sales (like soft drinks) and more repeat customers.

It's a bit like index fund investing. We can take advantage of a niche in the system largely because of the wasteful masses.

I don't go to McDonald's very often, but they are hiring right now and their sign says starting at $9.25 an hour. Minimum wage is $7.25.

Certainly it isn't a living wage, but it is more than they are legally required to pay. It's also more than Panera is advertising across the street...

If there wasn't so much construction, I might take advantage of this- $1 is cheap and some of the sandwiches are actually pretty good.

I had to download that after seeing this... not too shabby, free or $1 quarter pounder!  but in regards to "supersize me"  I really hate that movie. Here it is in a nutshell;

1/2 of the movie is about a guy who ate huge quantities of food and drank 42 oz containers of soda without exercise and thus gained weight.
1/2 of the movie is about blaming fast food rather than taking personal responsibility and calling for legislation to ban foods of higher fat content and or that might be above a certain size especially when kids are involved (like school lunches) but nobody ever remembers that part of it.

With that being said it's always more satisfying for me to get out the iron skillet and make something tasty at home but an occasional 1 dollar burger with no dishes to wash or prep is pretty sweet awesome :)

I just wanted to say thanks for your post OP!  I had to clear space on my phone to make room to install the app, but today I saved about 7 bucks with it!  So easy and fun!  I was able to get the two items in separate orders one right after the other using an ordering kiosk in the lobby.  They have a scanner on that machine and you can just scan the code on your phone.  There was a worker who walked me through the whole process.  Awesome!  Just an fyi, if you use a scanned code and then cancel the order, it will be a problem to resuse the code on the proper order.  For example, I scanned the coupon for $1 sandwich and choose quarter pounder, but then decided I wanted quarter pounder with cheese, so the helpful attendant cancelled my prior order on the kiosk and when we went to reorder it wouldn't accept the code.  I assume that's because the code is only good for 1 time a day and it considers it used after scanning.  Anyway, problem solved by manager coming over and giving me the proper discount.  So two bucks and tax for large fries and quarter pounder with cheese!  Sweet deal, that's like 77% off (quarter pounder with cheese is normally $5.69 and large fry is $3.29 before tax.  so what would have been almost $9 cost me $2)!  Thanks again.  Will be using that more.

Plus on the receipt for my quarter pounder, there was an offer for a buy one get one free if I filled out an online survey.  I did that, and got the validation code for the coupon, which is good for the next 30 days.  Not bad!

The deals in my app used to have $1 sandwiches once a day until 9/30. After I used that deal a few times, it disappeared from the app and was replaced with $2 sandwiches. Maybe the deal is there until 9/30 if you don't actually use it, but is removed once it is used a few times? or they did some math and realized they are getting totally screwed by offering big macs for a buck.

1$ sandwich here comes and goes. Stays for 6 days, goes away for 2. Come back for another 6 days.
