Made some money renting our yard space :)
« on: August 02, 2016, 05:31:54 PM »
We live in a HCOL area near the beach. It just so happens that people who live in apartments want to own boats but don't have storage.

Into the picture we step with our house and yard! Yesterday we rented the front yard to a couple of guys with a smallish boat for $1800 a year (the boat arrives Thurs). The back yard with separate access is set aside for a bigger boat that arrives mid-Aug for $2760 a year. The front yard is rented through a third party site that I registered on ages ago but thought nothing would come of it.

Obviously there are going to be people bringing their boats in and out at the weekend in summer but it's minimal inconvenience really. I suspect that use of the boats will taper off once they novelty wears off :)

Very nice!

There used to be a group that promoted urban farming called SPIN farming (small plot intensive farming) and they would rent people's yards in order to grow food.  I always thought that was a great use for a dormant yard but yours sound pretty great too.

Awesome.
I use to do this when I lived near the airport.  I had 6 spots designated.
It was a good side gig.

Make sure that your contract includes the fact that no bailment is provided.   Otherwise, when some third party drives off with the boat, the boat owners may come after you to replace it.

Otherwise, good idea!

I have seen ads where people were looking for plots, but community gardens are popping up everywhere here so I don't know if there is still so much of a need. The community gardens operate where a local authority permits a group to put raised beds in on an area of publicly owned land. A bit like allotments in the UK but much smaller and more manageable.

There's also a street somewhere in Aus who are growing food on the front nature strips and then sharing it between them, I love that idea and since apartment blocks also have a patch of grass out front in suburban streets it means everyone can get involved. Some local authorities are a bit down on growing stuff street side, I guess they are worrying about access and trip hazards.

Sure, makes sense. The guy at the back is putting a wheel lock on the trailer, I need to make sure the guy at the front also gets one! Most of the time our car will block the boat in (he is going to text ahead of time for access).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
