Sounds similar to the solder-reflow trick on dead Xbox 360 consoles about ten years ago. I made a fortune by high-schooler standards that summer fixing Xbox 360s.
If practical, I would add supplementary cooling of some sort (bigger heatsink/more airflow) to that part of the TV so that it doesn't overheat again. The problem will likely otherwise come back, and faster than it originally presented. That's what I did with the Xboxes, and it lowered the re-failure rate pretty well.
Good for you though, it's quite satisfying to fix stuff in odd ways.
