LG TV fix - the oven to the rescue!
« on: June 21, 2016, 08:36:22 AM »
The HDMI inputs on our bedroom LG tv stopped working.  After a quick google search I found out this is an issue with some LG tv's.  The solution?-bake the circuit board in the oven.  Took about 10 minutes to remove the 30+ screws and 6 ribbon connectors.  Throw the circuit board in the oven at 385 for 10 minutes.  Let it cool, reassemble and bingo.  Works like normal again.  The look on my wives face was priceless.  The solder wears out in the inputs and baking it allows it to melt, dry and become usable again.  Not sure how long this fix will last but it put a smile on my face!

Sounds similar to the solder-reflow trick on dead Xbox 360 consoles about ten years ago.  I made a fortune by high-schooler standards that summer fixing Xbox 360s.

If practical, I would add supplementary cooling of some sort (bigger heatsink/more airflow) to that part of the TV so that it doesn't overheat again.  The problem will likely otherwise come back, and faster than it originally presented.  That's what I did with the Xboxes, and it lowered the re-failure rate pretty well.

Good for you though, it's quite satisfying to fix stuff in odd ways.
