Landed a tutoring gig this year!
« on: April 22, 2015, 02:36:46 PM »
So I'm a high school physics/calculus teacher. Which is kind of frustrating financially because it is literally impossible for us to negotiate pay raises or get promotions. So I focus more on cutting costs than on climbing the ladder career wise.

But today, I sealed the deal. I'll be teaching calculus to 2 homeschooled kids on Saturdays throughout the year for $40/hour. For the entire school year! ($40/hour is pretty insane income for a young NC teacher.)

Plus my expenses are already covered, so I'll be throwing all of it at my 457b. So it's a tax free $40/hour!!

**Happy dance**

Nice! I'd love to get a gig like that. How did you find the kids you'll be tutoring?

A math teacher friend tipped me off.

Congrats! I'm sure those students are getting a great deal too: private tutoring from someone who already knows how to teach.

I'm also in the world of tutoring (mostly GRE and SAT). Sounds like you will have a great side-gig throughout the year, which might even lead to some referrals down the line.

I'm kicking around the idea of doing part time tutoring and quitting the full time teaching in a few years. Would love to hear any insight, greenpen!

Well, most of my experience has been in the test prep world (where there is actually decent money to be made). I'm currently teaching/tutoring part time as I work on a dissertation.

From my experience, the major test prep companies would drool for an actual teacher who wants to teach for them. A lot of people applying to these big companies are bright students with high scores but no teaching experience (so these companies spend a lot of money training people how to teach). I didn't find it particularly enjoyable to work for one of these big companies, but it's much easier to go out on your own after you work for one of them for a year or so.

My guess is that you could make a fair amount of money doing SAT Subject testing for Math and Physics. The demand might depend on your area (unless you could find a way to teach online). If you want to get into the SAT world, you might want to eventually take the SAT again, and study for it. It's kinda funny doing that as an adult.

Feel free to PM sometime if you want to chat about particular companies.

Good to know. I had no idea that the subject tests had so much demand for tutoring.

My guess is that you would also get stronger students doing test prep. Usually the students I help have a c or lower when I start helping them.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
