just published my first e-book!
« on: June 13, 2012, 03:09:56 PM »
inspired by grigory's awesome thread about passive income via e-books, i wrote one of my own! and i just put it on amazon today! (link's in my signature.)

i'm not really "promoting" it yet, as i'm approaching a website i've done some other writing for, to see if they will publish the intro. if they do, i think there will be sales out the yin yang. but either way, it's done -- it's out there! yippee!

thanks grigory for showing us how it's done! i'll keep you guys posted on how it goes!

awesome, if you don;t mind, I'd be interested to see what sort of income this generates for yourself, over the coming years.

+1.  Would be much obliged if you do keep us posted, seems like a fun experiment.

I know you said you aren't promoting it yet, but what sort of stuff are you planning on doing to promote it?

How long did it take to write?

Did you have anyone edit it?

Any other relevant info?

Cheers!

Holy cow - my ramblings about my insomnia-inspired writing actually inspired somebody?! :^D Congratulations, Megan - I hope your book takes off and ends up in top-10 in its category. :) Now all you need is a few 5-star reviews to convince all the undecided potential buyers out there. Time to start harassing your friends and family. ;)

thanks you guys!

arebelspy, to answer your questions, it took me about 3 weeks total to write the book. i have several under-employed english major friends who helped me edit.

to promote it, i'm first going to reach out to my mailing list that i already have for my dress business. if the site i've written for before decides to publish the intro, or even just link to it, i'm sure that will get the ball rolling in a major way because it's a big site full of my ideal customer. otherwise it will just be guest posting on blogs, sending review copies to some bloggers, and getting some word of mouth going.

i have a background in writing so the process was pretty fun for me overall. i have plans for the next 2 "be less crazy" books too. exciting!!

today's goal is to get one of my friends to write a review. :)

---

edited to add fresh news: the big site i write for IS going to publish the intro next friday! and they're giving me a regular advice column called "be less crazy" where people can write in and ask questions and i will lend them some rationality. so exciting!

i also just had the idea to incentivize my dress mailing list -- about 500 people -- to buy the book and leave a positive review. maybe i can give them 20% off their next order or something? the wheels are spinning ...

I wouldn't recommend incentivizing positive reviews. Any review is a good review.

I take it you've never had your book sales fall off a cliff after the first negative review... Even a single 1-star review can sabotage months of work. Get a few more of them, especially if they're not counter-balanced by 5-star reviews, and you'll be like the proverbial lightbulb - screwed.

hey guys, i just wanted to give you a quick update on the e-book!

it's gone pretty well so far. the first week i sold about 40 copies to friends and folks who already subscribe to my mailing list.

then on friday, my introduction appeared on the hairpin and got a huge response -- as of this morning i'm up to around 150 sales. my book made it into the top 10 in my category over the weekend, and even made it to #11 on the combined paper/e-book list for my category.

i'm hovering in the top 20 of my category now, and i'm #1 on happiness "hot new releases."

so, while i'm not ready to retire yet, i am excited about the good start this book has gotten. i'm blogging on the topic now, too (at belesscrazy.com), and have started the 2nd book -- trying to release it in july: be less crazy about love. it's going to have to be a bit longer, i think ... :)

Good job! How much do you make in terms of dollars from each sale?

since it's a short book and only $2.99, i make about $2 per sale. so at this point, the book has mostly just paid for the wine i drank while writing it. the cool thing is going to be, hopefully, selling copies and bringing money in every month until the end of time! :)

I found out about this awesome young writer publishing her new book via many links from the lady-blogospere. When I saw this post I finally made the link. Your intro is great and the topic is relevant to many young women. You (and Sally from Alreadypretty, who also wrote a book recently) are big inspirations to me. Congratulations for doing it!

thank you, osprey! how kind. :) i've been happily overwhelmed by the response so far and its inspriing me to dive right int book 2.

i honestly feel a little dumb that it took me this long to do this! but i'm doing it now, and that's what matters. i'm hoping with some hustle this can turn into what i do for a living.

This is great to hear that you've met with so much success so quickly. It's very encouraging for my wife and I, too, as we prepare to write our first e-book on how to adopt a vegetarian diet. Do you have any suggestions or general advice that you could give, if you don't mind?

ooh, good luck with your book!

from what i've read, the smartest thing to do from a business point of view is to do keyword searches (use google keywords tool) to see what people are searching for, so you can focus your e-book in on a popular topic. that wouldn't work for me in terms of picking a topic -- if i'm going to commit to sitting still long enough to write a book, i need to be in love with the topic -- but it can be useful in terms of how to couch your message. like, maybe more people search for one angle on your topic vs. another. it can be interesting and helpful just to see what people are searching for.

here are some other things to think about
- what other e-books are available on this topic? what would make yours different / better?
- can you come up with a snappy title? iterate and iterate on this until you come up with something short, descriptive, and at least somewhat sticky
- do you have relationships with other blogs with bigger audiences that cover your topic? start finding them and commenting on them.
- what kind of guest posts can you write for them that will delight their readership so much that they'll want to click through to your book?
- how else can you get the word out?

at this point, it's looking like this process is at least as much about hustle as it is about writing and i'm on the hustle journey, too, so i would appreciate any tips or ideas you pick up along the way! good luck putting it together!

Hey, thanks! And thanks for the pointers. All very helpful. We've got content, but we're pretty new to this whole "message spreading" thing, so this definitely helped. We'll most certainly share when we come across things that work. Thanks again!

Huh, looks like OP removed it for some reason.

Yup, I would be interested in an update too - guess I wasn't paying attention the first time this thread came around so I missed the book link.

hey there,

sorry for the confusion -- i removed the link because, i dunno, i felt spammy or something? but here's where you can find the book:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008B7WUWA/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&tag=belecr-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B008B7WUWA

so far i've made about a thousand dollars off this book! kind of awesome. whenever i post a new "be less crazy" column on the hairpin, i get a bump in sales, which makes sense.

have been super busy with wedding stuff -- i'm getting married this weekend -- but am heading to costa rica on monday for a month and will definitely get some more stuff written then. let's see if i can't crank out the second book (be less crazy about love). :)
