Just got a free FB stock (worth $162) Feeling lucky!
« on: July 20, 2017, 01:59:47 PM »
A little badassary (sp?) today or just a little bit a darn luck. I Just got a free share of FACEBOOK, worth 162 bucks! Thanks the MMM facebook group talking about the broker/dealer Robinhood earlier today (it is like etrade, schwab, vanguard etc.), I been thinking about signing up for awhile but after reading some positives comments from people I took the plunge. I already have an options house account but wanted a quick trade account I can get in and out of stocks without any commission.

I looked for sign up bonuses (as any good MMMer would do) and found one where you can be awarded a free share of a stock when you sign up through a referral link. I found someones, signed up with 500 bucks, and bam! got FB! whoooo! Now I instantly have 623 in my new investment account instead of 500. Sometimes it is the small wins that make me happy.

If anyone is interested in the referral link you can PM me or look at it in my signature.

I remember when facebook went public. The IPO was a frenzy at like $50. Now it's $162. I thought there was way too much hype and avoided facebook like the plague. I think this is evidence that I cannot pick stocks.

Good for you! This post kind of bums me out, though, for purely personal reasons. I bought FB stock (not much, probably around 10 shares) shortly after it IPO'd for around $60/share. It dropped a bit and my DH made fun of me for jumping on a trend, so I sold it for a small loss. I do some very small time stock picking purely as a hobby (no facepunches please, all my long term/retirement monies are in index funds!) and this is the only time I ever lost money on a pick! No more listening to DH!

If I remember correctly, FB even went down to $20 or so during its first week, and people were bashing it like crazy.  Those people are fairly quiet now at $150.

yeah I shocked when I saw it was worth 160 ish. Now it is 170. Amazing that it IPOed at 32 a share, people for sure never saw that it would be valued up here. But in many ways, some of the valuation is warranted with it's potential for VR, AR and advertising revenue.

One of my biggest financial regrets is not buying Facebook at $17 per share.

You can say that for any stock in March of 2009. I saw Bank of America get down way below single digits, oh well! I know for the next crisis I am going in with a higher cash position and will snap some good deals up. Although at the time, it did feel like the end of the world as we knew it, so I understand why I did not pull the trigger more than I did.

I purposely didn't buy FB because I hate FB. See me "got rid of FB post".  Very poor decision on my part. :(

Congrats. I gave it a shot, and got Chesapeake Energy (CHK).

I did finally get a share of my company's stock too. It's never been worth the trade fee for one share, but since Robinhood has no transaction cost, I finally picked up a pair of shares.

Here's my link if anyone wants it.

DPC, have you enjoyed the platform? It will not be my main stock broker/dealer, but it is still wild when I sold a few stocks and I did not pay commission. Schwab just recently lowered commissions to 4.95 per trade, which is shocking low compared to the 9 bucks per trade I paid for 10 years! I have thought about buying a few smaller batch stocks (sub $500) to be a little more wild a crazy with it. I do not start stock positions sub $2,000 in my Schwab account because of commissions.

What are the restrictions on this offer? Can you sign up and just get a free share of BRK-B (or A if they are insane)

Note* I found the terms, you have a 1% chance of getting a stock with a value per share between 50 and 200 bucks. 98% chance the stock is worth between 2.50 and 10 dollars

I wish you could get BRK-B! that would be sweet! I think the stocks value from 3 dollars up to 200 (appl, FB) a few others. Not sure the odds, but I think you are correct with what you found. I think I just got lucky.

No way they're handing out Berkshire. @marchdesign: I do like the app. I have my real money in betterment, but for a few small fun purchases, I like the app.

I'm actually amazed at how easy to buy and sell shares. The swipe to buy / sell is stupid easy. It's harder to delete a text than sell a share. If you're used to using a normal brokers website, that won't matter, but to newer investers it's super simple.

It does feel really weird to buy/sell w/o fees. I did like 6 single share transactions a couple days and it cost nothing. It makes it feel like co. shares are interchangable.

Haha, I was one of those people bashing it at $48. They weren't making money. Then they started advertising and generating revenue so I dipped my toes in at $26. Then I bought 50 more shares at $74 about a year later. Looking pretty at $170 now :) wish I would have bought more than 60 shares now!
