Title: I sold my car!
Post by: ZePetiteStash on February 11, 2018, 08:14:33 PM
I made a big step and finally sold my car! It was a definite clown car too (mid-sized SUV, although, I bought it used)

I’m a born and raised Midwesterner and lived in several college towns (where I could’ve, should’ve gone car-less, but just couldn’t). I’ve worked for a couple of years in a larger, non-college, but still Midwestern city. When I moved here, I purposefully lived close to work (close enough to walk!), but still couldn’t give up my gas hog. Then, a friend moved into a new house and had use for it, so I let her borrow it for the last six months, while I tested out a car-free lifestyle and surprisingly, I loved it! We’ve arranged for her to buy the car from me.  I’m not a naturally athletic person, but it’s easy to bike when your other option is walking!

That is totally badass! Way to go.

Bikes are where its at - I use them as much as I can (and sometimes more than I should!).

Is it a huge relief to not have to worry about the car, insurance, parking, and all that other nonsense? When I downshifted to one family car and sold my second car, the biggest profit was the mental space, not even the money.

Oh for sure! There is a sense of extra mental space post-car. There were definitely more logistics to think about when I first gave up my car (which roads are most bikable, how to carry larger things, stringing together errands based on how much stuff I can carry), but the bike itself is so simple and any biking clears my head in a way driving doesn’t.
