I rewired a lamp
« on: March 24, 2016, 01:34:59 PM »
I know this is tiny in the grand scheme of things, but I'm still proud of myself.  My son knocked over a lamp the other day and broke the socket in it.  My initial reaction (before I caught myself) was to buy another lamp.  However, I love the lamp and didn't really want to spend money on a new one, so I decided to see if I could fix it.  A couple of You Tube videos and a $4 part later, the lamp is fixed!
Would have cost me $100-$150 to buy a similar one new.

I'll admit that I laughed, but seriously nice job!

Good for you!  Fixing lamps, in general, is something that I've been wanting to try.  It does seem relatively simple and new lamps are pricey.  Was there a particular youtube video or channel that was most helpful?

Hmmm, $150 floor or table lamp.

I'm having a bit of difficulty wrapping my mind around that concept...

No snickers here.  We are taught that electricity is dangerous stuff.  So the first time you actually do some wiring is really  an initiation into the tribe of accomplished DIYers.

It's a Tiffany style lamp from back in my spendier days.  When I bought it 16-17 years ago, I think I paid $79.  I will spend money on nice things for my home.  I plan on spending a lot more time at home in FIRE.

My wastefulness prior to 2014 would have been posted to the wall of shame.

Thanks!  I've had to realize that I really can do more stuff like this and not just toss things out so easily.
