I ran some errands the other day.

That may not sound so bad-ass at first...
until you realize I mean it literally :)

I wanted to get in a work-out before work, but I also had to go to the post office, the bank, and drop off a package with UPS.
I didn't have time to do all the trips by bicycle and work out.  I considered doing the errands by car, but at barely over 3 miles round trip, that just seemed stupid.

So I just ran.  Carrying the package, and a couple thousand in cash.  And had enough time to shower and make it to work on time.

I like to do this too sometimes, especially to the nearby hardware store which is on a road that's not very bike-friendly, but has sidewalks that I can run on. I'm surprised I don't see more mention of it on the forum. Glad to see there's someone else here who uses running in their transportation quiver!

seriously, bakari, I love you! I love your attitude-you are super badass! :) I have a friend who jogged everywhere with her two kids in a jogging stroller. she said she had to keep running or she got too cold in the chicago winter. now she has a cargo bike for them. very inspiring!

You're my hero! I love your attitude.
I jog to the grocery store (no bicycle - facepunch?) and then walk back. I'm glad you brought this up!

Nice! I used to run some of my errands when the kids were still small enough to fit in the jogging stroller. It was nice to have the extra cargo space.

That is very cool and a great way to be efficient! I have thought about this before but never done it.

Well done....  My jogging days are behind me now (bad knees), but I am totally on board with doing every local errand on a bike whenever possible so I can relate.

Way to go!  This is a great idea I may have to use.  I hate going to the bank in my car because It's a pain in the ass to get there.  On the other hand, there is a nice running trail that goes right by it (now that I think about it).  This is also ideal as there is a layer of glass between you and the teller, so the smell factor is minimized =)

That was enjoyable....  I can't even stay on my knees (like looking under the bed for something) for more than a minute or two without pain coming into play.  Too much sports in my younger days, volleyball at 40 was the straw that broke this camel's back.  But oddly enough I can walk or bike all day long - it's impact and pressure that trip me up.

Oh, we're on here.  I run commute 4 days a week when it's nice out (public transit the other days).  I push my son in a stroller to daycare.  Then I toss my backpack in the stroller and run in to my gym for a shower.  Extra set of workout clothes goes on after the workday is through and I push the stroller home.  It's about 7 miles round trip, not counting the 1 mile walk to daycare.  I get some weird looks when people realize I don't have a kid in the stroller, but I don't care.

Definitely add running to your quiver.  If you're in halfway decent shape and live in a compact urban area, it can be even easier than biking.

And congrats, Bakari.  Glad to have you back on the forum.

It's stories like this - recounting a money-saving, thoughtful way to achieve a common task like running errands- that are inspiring. And how lots of little things create even bigger inspiring stories over time.

I find myself tempted to envy -I know I shouldn't-  co-workers who live a few blocks from work. (I have a 24 mile commute.)
They are also the ones who complain the most about the cost of things as they roll in using the SUVs they haven't finished paying for.

One family, that lives about four blocks from work and school, once owned a minivan that stopped running. They didn't have the cash to pay for another one right away so they all rode their bikes about town, causing a sensation. Other people were inspired to start riding their bikes again. But the family hated the attention. They felt poor. So the moment they could make a down payment on an SUV they did, and have been complaining about the cost of gas, etc. ever since.

Anyway, thanks for the story. Thanks for the sanity.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
