Someone was going to throw away this beauty, luckily my dad snagged it for me because he knew I wanted one really bad...

After a little rust removal

To be honest, I have absolutely no Idea what this little piece does, but it seemed important. It was completely rotted out so I decided to do a little improv with some PVC pipe I had laying around...

Wrapped in Electrical tape, and we are as good as new!

Always use primer first!

Did you sharpen the blades.

It won't cut well until you sharpen the blades (or have it done.)

The wheel says "American Lawn Mower Company - Muncie, Indiana" and a quick google search lead me to http://earthwisetools.com/about/.  Judging by the look of it when I first got it, I would say you are looking at somewhere between the 1950s and 1960s

My grandma used to have a mower just like that! But in Thomas-the-Tank-Engine-blue. I miss pushing it around her nonexistent lawn.

I used one (a newer model) for a couple of years when my lawn was smaller than it is now.   My advice:  mow more often.

Push mowers work great if you're serious enough about your lawn to mow every four days (which is recommended around here mid season) but if you slack off and let it get too shaggy they are pretty useless.

The other downside is that they don't collect clippings for you.  I live in a soggy part of the country where failing to bag your clippings in the early spring tends to lead to moss and fungus problems.  It's fine, even helpful, to mulch them in place later in the year.

I'm pretty sure that this moment, right here, is the start of my midlife crisis.  I just wrote an entire internet post about lawn care, officially completing my transformation into Suburban Dad.

I had one of the recent-model push mowers; surprisingly, it came with a bagger.

Great job! Don't mean to spoil the party but I prefer how it looked before painting (would have saved you $$).

NVM it looks great after as well. Hopefully it wears in and gets a great patina.

I'm with you bro, I wouldn't have painted it but it was super rusty and after I got all the rust off it took most of the original paint as well, so I really had to paint it to prevent future rust.
