I Fixed My iMac!!
« on: October 17, 2014, 08:03:00 PM »
My elderly iMac stopped working.  I took it to the local mac tech store.  They offer free diagnostics.  They said that most likely that the power supply was kaput.  They could fix it for $75 for a refurbished power supply and $90 in labor.
First, I checked iFixit.  They had a power supply for $150.  I almost decided to go back and let them do it.  Then I saw the tutorial they have posted.  It didn't look too tedious. With the part number I searched on eBay and found one for $30.  Unfortunately, the part # on iFixit was wrong so I had to return it for another $7.50.  Finally found the right one for $50 on eBay.
And today I put it all back together and seems to be working.  ToTal Cost: $67

Nice job!

I, too, have done some surgery on my elderly iMac and macbook pro.  You'd be surprised how many parts show up on ebay after people essentially deem these great machines "obsolete" after a few years.

You'd also be surprised what upgrading a HDD to a solid state drive will do.  Since you're comfortable opening up your iMac, consider upgrading to a SSD, too.

A couple of years back my eldest son talk me into the SSD.  It powers up lighting fast.

Awesome.  That's probably why the "old" iMac still suits your needs.  Easily the best bang for your buck upgrade you can do to an old computer.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
