I have been at my current job for approximately 4 years, it's in the same field as my previous favorite job; however, it's in a much more rural area that is not use to my degree area. This has resulted in my being severely underpaid and underutilized due to my employers' lack of understanding what my "scope of care" could include patient wise. I have worked hard these last 4 years with the hope of advancing my pay and responsibilities. I had almost given up. However, one of my employers has engaged me in some serious conversations regarding my goals, positives and cons of my current position etc. The last month has had several hypothetical scenarios discussed.
Today, I accepted a new position with that employer. The new job will not begin for approximately 7 months (some timing is beyond our control) and has several positives for me:
- my salary will increase by $15,000
- I will have yearly reviews with possibility of raises and guaranteed COLA
- my responsibilities will increase with regards to patient care
- my employer is going to "sponsor" me in taking 3 national certifications that will allow me to further increase my value and role in patient care
The end result for me is that I'm REALLY excited about my job again. I feel like I will be "carrying" my financial weight (my husband has never made me feel this way it's just me being hard on myself), and I'm going to be taking on a more active role in helping patients. Life is good.
