1. Marry an engineer who needs a project to tinker with at all times.
2. Get quote for basic bathroom remodel. $25K. Agree with DH that this is highway robbery.
3. Suggest you do it yourselves -- after all, DH has mad skills, you are free grunt labor, and kids are old enough to help. Listen to grumbles and grumping. Agree that of course we're too busy.
4. Immediately get sick/injured/snowed in three weekends in a row. Spend the three most boring weekends of your married life, all in a row, curled up whimpering in your recliner, doing nothing but watching boring bad TV. Watch your DH about jump out of his skin from the sheer boredom of it all.
5. Wait for DH to say, "you know, I think I can do that bathroom myself." Tell him what a great idea that is and ask him when he wants to go to Lowe's.
Yeah, I only wish I could say I planned it that way. :-)

6. Have a kid, realize you have no free time, spend the $25k...
Seriously, my DIY activities came to a grinding halt post kiddo.

1) Marry an engineer.
2) Make a plan for building a walk-in closet in your house.
3) Let the plan ripe and make it perfect.
4) Let your engineer spouse be fired for unbusinesslike reasons at his job.
5) Let him hire a good lawyer and sue his employer to pay him a year and a half salary.
6) Let him be sent home for the remaining 3 months of his contract.
7) Tell him know you really appreciate it if he would use that time at home to build this closet.
8) Let him travel with a friend on an unexpected 2 week fishing holiday to New Zealand to prevent him from going nuts at home.
9) After the fishing trip, let him build the closet with cheap materials and help in the evenings and weekend.
10) Let him find a new job after those 3 months are over.

Hehe. Mine (not an engineer) does a lot of the smaller things around the house (and a few big things--we unsuccessfully tried to install a water heater at our last house), but I somehow convinced him that we could replace our rotting brick mould and storm door. I tried to talk him into replacing the actual door ourselves, too, because it's not in great shape, but he wasn't into that. Baby steps...

Sigh. Two steps forward, one step back.
One weekend he agrees to DIY the bathroom. The next weekend he goes out and buys himself a 3D printer. Because, you know . . . well . . . because. $^#&%#@#!#$#.

No need to convince anyone - I just do it! ( I'm the 'engineer' ).
However, I certainly agree on the kid part...we have two and my DIY project also came to a grinding halt.
