Home roasted coffee?
« on: June 22, 2013, 01:17:42 PM »
Does anyone else roast your own coffee?

Perks:

 - Really easy and not time consuming
 - Much better if you like the flavor of coffee
 - Much cheaper than purchasing coffee (except probably folgers.. we get unroasted beans for $6.25/lb at a local shop)
 - Your beans can ALWAYS be very freshly roasted

We initially got a sampler pack online but quickly found out it was cheaper locally. YMMV there.

Here is a video of someone doing it. We have a worse popcorn popper so it's a bit different but the basic idea is the same. Just a bit more stirring required to not burn it for me.

I use a whirly pop that I attached a BBQ thermometer to and the stove. Takes me about 15 minutes to roast 2 cups of beans. It does make a lot of smoke, so I don't do it as often in the winter. As long as I'm not going for French/espresso roast, I rarely burn the beans.

I like Sweet Maria's for beans as well as for advice. However, I have been looking for an East Coast version. Anyone have a supplier on the East Coast they like?

I looked at Terroir coffee site, which is in Mass., and they only do roasted coffee, which is a shame because they use top quality green coffee.

A quick google search found this, which is in NJ- http://www.coffeebeandirect.com/

Also, North Carolina- http://www.thecaptainscoffee.com/shop/green-coffee-beans

Just so you don't think I can't Google:

I've found this place in Florida https://www.ccmcoffee.com/
and this place in VA http://www.greencoffeestore.com

I just don't know any of them by more than their website.

Heh, wasn't implying that you couldn't google!  I've just never used anyone other than sweet maria's so I had to google it to find some.

Been using https://burmancoffee.com/ recently. Really great.

Also built a nicer roaster than when I used to do this - now it's automatic mostly!

I started doing this myself with a whirly pop... upgraded my equipment and it's now a profitable side-gig!
