Have not paid for a hair cut in 10+ years
« on: August 12, 2015, 02:12:02 PM »
I bought a cheap electric hair trimmer at Ross more than a decade ago. I don't even really maintain it, as it is dirt cheap to replace at $15 and even without maintenance it has lasted all these years.

In any case, I used to pay about $40 a month for a weekly hair cut. I now cut my own hair, since I was just having it shaved off anyway (though I was big into dating at the time and wanted to look my best).

I estimate $15 invested in the trimmer has saved me $4,800 in hair cut costs alone, not to mention drive time, time waiting, etc.

Kudos to you for some fantastic savings. My old boss left early every Tuesday for his weekly haircut and I always wondered how much it cost him.

Do people really have hair that grows so fast weekly cuts make sense? I cut my husband's about once a month.

Yeah, it was bizarre to me. I rarely noticed a difference and only found out about it when he finally explained to us why he was leaving.

I can't even tell you how long it's been that I've cut my own hair. Jeez, maybe close to 10 years? I bought an inexpensive Wahl clipper and learned to cut my own hair. I never spent much money on haircuts anyways, maybe $15/month. Still, it saves me time and money so score.

I probably only cut once every 2 months (laziness) but DW does it. Our trimmer is really shitty but has lasted for maybe 4-5 years now? Probably we should invest in a better one.

The $20 I used to pay always felt like a ton because they only took like 10 mins tops to do the job.

My hair grows really fast, and is curly, so even the slightest growth makes it look terrible. Though I sometimes go two weeks between cuts. I look very unkempt then though.

Add to that jeans, tennis shoes and a scruffy beard, and people think I'm homeless or something.

I just started this year with a $20 set up from Walmart and I have already saved.  I hated to get haircuts, but now I try to give myself a trim at the beginning and mid-month.

Although I hated getting haircuts, they always made me feel better after one. Hence why I do two cuts a month, plus 2 cuts lets me correct any minor errors I might have made from the prior cut (like missing a stray hair here or there).

No regrets on this small lifestyle change!

Been cutting mine for awhile.  Cut 8 year old sons last night.  Zero spent on cuts in 2015.  Annual savings = $300 between us.   I'm saving that to give him $20,000 for his 30th birthday.   He'll be retired by then,  so it will be fun money for him.

I don't understand how getting your head shaved at a barber costs $40......Especially 10 years ago.

EVen in my very HCOL area a legit haircut with a beard trim is $15-20, in 2015.

My husband and I both cut our hair at home as well. For women who eyebrows have raised in suspicion, I get my layers done professionally once a year (cost me $20, $25 with tip).  Then every 8 weeks at home I use a crea-clip to deal with dead ends. Saves me a ton of money. Took me a while to get the hang of it but it was worth the $40 investment of the crea-clip plus shears.

Funny story -- a couple of years ago, I was schlepping a rucksack full of recyclables to the big recycling collection dumpsters on the campus where I work.  My apartment complex didn't have recycling.  I probably had a beard, and my hair may have been a little scruffy.  I was dressed in my regular "commuting" clothes -- cargo shorts and a t-shirt -- and was on my bike.  A woman was at the recycling center, too, and we started talking as we dumped our stuff in.  At some point, she asked me if I stayed nearby.  I thought it was strange that she used the word "stayed".  Then I realized she thought I was homeless.  I told her I was a faculty member.  :)

My SO and I get haircuts every 1-2 years, depending. He and I both have long hair, so it's more difficult. Do people with long hair often cut their own? Are there good tutorials on this? Because I'd be pretty terrified of my hair coming out completely crooked. We just need trims - neither of us do layers or coloring or anything.

25 Years.

Did a buzz cut in 1990 because I thought I was going to get deployed for Desert Shield.

Decided I liked it.

Have kept the "chic" buzz cut ever since.

Cool in the summer, minimal shampoo usage, no need for a comb, never gets messy, has only cost me $50 over 25 years (had to buy a new set of clippers a few years back).  What's not to like?

I actually haven't cut my hair at all for ten years, let alone paid for some one to do it.

I have really long hair. I usually have layers but when I'm growing them out I use a crea-clip. Definitely worth the investment and there are tons of tutorials on youtube out there for it.

I said I paid $40 a month for a weekly hair cut (which is $10 a hair cut also in a HCOL), not $40 for each hair cut. That's why you're confused..........

It's been about 25 years since I have paid for a haircut. Same reasons as you, both cost and convenience.

I'm still using my 25 year old Wahl clippers, but I would be surprised if what is currently sold under the same brand is comparable quality.
