Hauled 9 tons of free landscaping rock
« on: February 26, 2017, 09:00:49 PM »
I don't actually know how much it is, but it was about 20 short trips with a target of 900 pounds max cargo load.  It took about 5 hours, so maybe not the best ROI but I'm almost retired, and could use the exercise.

Good for you!  Well done, and all that jazz!

Not very mustachian to suggest, but perhaps a long hot shower, or a soak in a hot tub of water, would be a good thing?

(For the muscle soothing, not that I'm suggesting you smell.  Though, after moving that much rock ... maybe you do!?!)

Thanks, I just came back from the hot tub.  Gotta have my antimustachian flaws.

The crazy thing is these people were giving away the rock from an old retaining wall.  It's pretty nice and mossy.  They also offered me some awesome flagstone that I didn't have a use for.  What could they possibly be replacing it with?  Money to burn I guess.

I've had a few projects in mind for the rock, but never really wanted to put rocks or delivery in my budget.  This neighbor was really close -- I could have just used a wheelbarrow if we didn't live in a hilly area.  Worked out really well for both of us I guess (since they needed it gone pronto)

I had two helpers, but the way we ran the operation I ended up touching every stone at least during the unloading phase.

I'll measure it a bit tomorrow, because maybe my estimate is high... who knows?  My arms are sore and that's what's important.

Awesome.  You should post back with pics of what you end up building/making/doing with it.

I would love to do some stuff with my yard, but I'm renting, not sure how long I'll be here, and what needs doing most would be likely to be pretty spendy.  But I'm happy to live vicariously through the efforts of others.  :-)

This made me smile.  :)

Way to go!

Awesome. Way to go. Can't beat free rocks and good exercise to boot.

I did something similar last summer. Laid a paver patio. Moved over 600 pavers from front driveway to back yard along with about 6 tons of material. One wheelbarrow full at a time. And up a large hill. Also dug the whole thing out one shovel full at a time. My neighbors thought I was bat shit crazy.

My neighbors are constantly giving away free landscaping materials. It's kind of crazy. We got 10 free medium sized rocks last year that someone was giving away to decorate our yard. These would have cost anywhere from $50 - $150 at a landscaping store.

Not free but some years ago, I decided that throwing mulch in our plant beds was expensive and stupid.  We put down landscape fabric and colored stone.  Now, instead of spending $Texas on mulch and having to work like dogs for 3 hours, I can do nothing.  In the fall, I can take my back hurricane leaf blower and blow the leaves without the stones even moving.

$Texas must be a LOT of money

900 pounds per trip?  I hope you used your bike trailer.

Burt Reynolds Turd Ferguson thinks so, at least.
