Harvested over 100lbs of wild rice
« on: September 04, 2017, 08:44:35 PM »
The DW and I secured about a years worth of wild rice today by harvesting 107lbs in 5 hrs of work in a canoe.  Once it's processed we will only have about 50 lbs but that is still a great amount for gifts and home consumption.

Wow! Do you have any photos you could post? I'd love to see what that actually looks like (the harvesting process).

Well done!

Good job! I would also love to see photos of the harvest, if you care to share.

That is pretty cool. i don't know anything about wild rice harvesting, why would you end up with only half after processing?

That is SUPER cool! Is this like a u-pick operation, or does it grow where you live? I also would love to see photos!

It grows here but some years are better than others.  When the rice gets processed it gets dried and then rolled to separate the grain from the chaff, this is what accounts for the 50% reduction in weight.

I'll see if I can post a couple pictures later today but the basic process is to grab a canoe and a partner and find the rice.  Then one person stands in the back of the canoe and propels the boat with a push pole while the other person used two sticks (knockers) to bend the rice stalk over the canoe and knocks it with the stick so the ripe rice falls into the canoe.

I'd love to know more about this.

How do you process it?

How do you know it is safe to eat? Does the processing remove any toxins that may be present in a polluted waterway?

That's awesome!  Good for you on utilizing a renewable natural resource, and spending a day outside on top of it.  For those asking about the risks of wild harvest.  There's always a risk since you don't know who's been dumping chemicals, taking dumps, or anything else like that, but if you choose a reasonable site and wash the food there's not much to worry about.  I say this as someone who harvests berries, tree fruits, mushrooms, and a wide variety of water and land animals.
