Happy anniversary to me
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:32:26 PM »
14 years ago, on October 1, 1999, at 22 years old, I got married.

Why is this badass???

Because we met when I was just 20 years old, and we have survived a whole hellava lot of shit. At one point in our marriage, we were homeless, jobless and owed approx $300k (not including a mortgage) We've lived in 7 different states while married, moved 13 times (5 of which paid by the army) and we will probably move 4 more times (by the army) We have 13 years of college between the two of us and now down to one vehicle.

We can finally see the light at the end (even with a negative net worth) and two healthy happy kids (2.5yrs and 1yr old)

Anyways, thank you all for your support and facepunches ;-) Looking forward to our financially secure future!!!

Happy anniversary! I also got married at 22, and this year was our 15th. It does feel pretty bad ass.

Congrats on all that you've overcome and accomplished together. I hope that each year just gets better and better.

Happy anniversary!

I wonder why people in the US get married so young? Here in Holland people get married around 30, but on this forum I see a lot of people who got married in their early 20s. Is there a reason for that, other than love? :)

Depends on what area of the country you're in.  I grew up in TX and spent some time in OK, where people I knew married by their early twenties, but I went to college in New England (northeast), and most of my friends didn't get married until their thirties.  I married when I was 29.

Congrats!

The median age for first marriages in the US is 25.8 for women, 28.3 for men (which isn't as young as the OP).
National Health Statistics Report, 2012

This articles suggests is co-habiting, and the title implies it's the dutch getting married later, not the americans getting married young.

Also interesting, a list by country of mean ages.

Thanks all :)

I thought we got married really young..which is also why i thought we were a bit badass...and because our mmm life isn't very badass, but i needed to celebrate something!

most of our friends didn't get married until late 20s..and i have a few single friends (never married) who are mid/late 30s..

Anyways, sometimes i think "how in the hell did our marriage survive that?" And i don't really know the answer, but it feels pretty awesome to have someone like that by your side whom you know will be there no matter what!!

We just need to get our money shit straight once and for all...

Ha, who knew! This shows that it all depends on your cultural perspective. I find 37 very late to get married (Dutch men), but maybe in a small country like Holland it takes a bit longer to find your true love ;)

By the way: shocking! Cameroon: average age of men: 25. Women: 12!!!

How about Yemen - 28M/11.5F?!  Yeah super disturbing.

From wiki again: Yemen is ranked last of 135 countries in the 2012 Global Gender Gap Report.  Human Rights Watch reported on discrimination and violence against women as well as on the abolition of the minimum marriage age of fifteen for women. The onset of puberty (interpreted by some to be as low as the age of nine) was set as a requirement for marriage instead.  Publicity about the case of ten-year old Yemeni divorcee Nujood Ali brought the child marriage issue to the fore not only in Yemen but worldwide.

Sorry for the hijack, OP!

Well ,my parents were 18 and 19 and next year will be their 50th together. Don't let the young age thing faze you, OP. just think of all the youth (and relative youth)you get to enjoy together!

Congratulations.
