Had my first 5 figure daily loss!
« on: August 20, 2015, 07:05:44 PM »
The market was down a bit today, but my portfolio was down just over $11,000! That's more than my annual bonus this year, melted away in a single day.

But I'm not worried. I own just as many shares as I did yesterday, and the rollercoaster is kinda fun to watch. I know that it doesn't matter what someone else says the value is - all that matters is 5 years from now.

Wait till it's down $110,000, that'll be quite the ride!

Mine dropped a touch, but now I can send that cash in that I had sitting by the sidelines.

I'm thrilled to see market losses as long as I'm still working and buying shares.  I hope it tanks 20% over the next year.

Of course, after that I won't be a net buyer anymore and I'll wish for it to only go up forever.  I expect market declines to be harder to swallow once I'm living off of that money.

Congrats! A five figure daily loss in a slightly down market is definitely something to smile about.

I just checked, I'm also way down today.  It's horrible, I'm only worth as much today as I was last week.  The end is nigh!

I've been sitting on some extra cash for the last couple months and just put it into my Vanguard account a few minutes ago. Today at work the tv was on Fox News and they were talking about how things have been going down the last couple days.  The first thing that came to mind was "nice! I need to get in on that."

There is a gambling expression "You haven't really lived till you lost more in a night than an average person makes in a year." You haven't reached that point yet.

I have no idea if I am up or down today and honestly I don't really care.

I'm down about $2500 (USD) today.  Nice to have a big enough (diversified) portfolio that it will swing that much in a day (maybe this belongs under Mustachian People Problems...)

Unfortunately, I'm only down about 75 bucks. So sad. Maybe someday I can lose 6 figures in a day.

^This.  I keep waiting for the "big one" in the next year or so, and I'll be cheering.  But much longer after that, it's no longer funny.

If firecalc gives you 0% chance of outliving your money, wether the stock market goes up or down, it won't matter at that point.

We lost $2,000ish yesterday. Have a ways to go to hit the 5 figures...
(I remember my cousin telling my mother that they lost a few million dollars in the 2008 crash... well, the market didn't exactly hit rock bottom, so it must have been a decent problem to have...)

I am however regretting my "we need to diversify internationally" decision from earlier this year, because that was almost all from VTIAX...

Down about $10k this month on an approx $240k portfolio, so just under a 4% loss.  I only wish I had more cash to plow in.  Doesn't look like I'll hit $250 by end of 3rd quarter, but that was an arbitrary goal anyway - I'll take the low prices while I'm a buyer!

I only lost $2100 on Aug 19, and $4000 over the last 4 days. Looks like next week's 401k deposit will be more valuable than the last :)

I told my coworkers that my investments lost a few thousands of dollars this week, everyone's reaction was "You should withdraw your money now before you go broke". I tried explaining that if my investments were at 0, there would be bigger things to worry about. I also tried explaining that I am buying my shares at a lower price (for sale), but no one understood why it was a good thing, even when I explained them, they were still like "Yea but you are losing money.". I don't blame them, but it goes to show that we (as a society) lack education when it comes to money. I was like them too before finding MMM so I understand why they don't know any better.

I really don't. Even though that would likely help me (assuming it goes back up later)- I know that would hurt way too many people who are retired and already in draw down.  (My parents included. My father is FINALLY retiring. A giant market drop and he might change his mind. He is so stuck in 'just one more year'. He could have been out a decade ago...)

I guess now is the time to fund my Roth for this year! I just started it last year and recently got it transferred to Vanguard. I haven't checked it today, but my 401K is definitely in the toilet. I'm starting to learn from you guys this is a good thing! I wonder how long it will be low like this? I'm new to funding an IRA, so I am not sure how long it will take Vanguard to get my money in there if I call them tomorrow or Monday.

Lost about 11K.  Glad for bi-weekly dollar cost averaging is my friend.

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to dollar cost average my Roth contributions for the rest of the year or take the cash stash and plug it all in right away.

Ack! Now down $16k in the last two days!

Considering drawing down my line of credit to shove money at the market in advance of my paycheques. Someone convince me this is a bad idea.

It's just as bad of an idea today as it was last week.  Stick to the plan, maintain your AA, invest on a schedule, and you can't have any regrets afterwards.  You'll feel silly if you go all in now and it tanks another 10% next week.

Yeah I have lost about $12k in the past 2 days. My dad called me earlier to ask if I was ok, he thought I was following the market and I was like....,'yeah, I still have the same amount of shares, and won't be touching it for 5+ years."

Lost just over 37K for the week. A bit sad, but just because we don't have any ready cash to throw in while it's so low.

Might be able to scrounge up 5k by next week, but it seems so piddly and knowing my amazing timing, it will probably be on the upswing by the time I get it moved over.

I guess it couldn't hurt tho. ;)

This just in.  Ours actually ending up sliding about $30K.  I'm not entirely upset.  Our regular 401K contributions are being dollar-cost averaged and I haven't funded my Roth for the year yet, so I'll get in on the downward slide.

This made me laugh, that someone feels 5K is "so piddly." ;)  My gross yearly income is 40K and this is my first year as a Mustachian and 5K is half my savings so far for the year.

I'm glad this is a good time to fund my Roth, as I haven't done any yet this year. I wonder if it will drop even more? Maybe I will just fund half right now and then see if the market drops further and fund the rest.

I hadn't started funding my Roth for the year yet either.  I just accelerated my first investment for this week, then the rest will follow fairly regularly between now and the end of the year until I am fully funded.

You can't really predict these things... just stay the course.  I am, however, pillaging my freezer for the next few months to cash flow a bit more so I can throw in a few extra bucks -- mostly "fun money."

We were down $7k as of this morning when I checked Mint. This is the first time we've had enough money *and* there's been a discernible enough drop in the market for me to notice, so I'm SO GLAD I noticed this thread last week. I was actually pleased to see the drop (cheaper to buy FTW!) instead of lamenting it like most folks.

Hmmm, so I'm going to put in some Roth money for the first time this year since this seems like a good day to do it... Previously I put everything in a target retirement fund (2045), but I know a lot of people here buy VTSAX. I noticed the shares are quite a bit more, about $49/ea, whereas the VTIVX (t.r.f. 2045) is only $18/ea, but the expense ratio is much lower on the VTSAX and the long term returns seem higher too. Does it make much of a difference? I am so new to investing.

.......Ohhh, wait, I just realized you have to have at least $10,000 to buy VTSAX...so does that mean you've got to have money probably in some other funds first that you would have to "sell" to "buy" VTSAX, right?  Because you can only contribute $5500 per year to an IRA, I guess you'd already have to have money from a previous year (which I do) to be able to buy it right now, right?

Yeah, and it doesn't count if you have say $5500 in your Roth VTSAX and $4500 in a taxable account. That said, the expense ratio isn't terrible for the non-admiral version.

Well, after today I'm down almost 4k. Being down makes me sad (since I'm very close to my first 100k), but the other part of me is saying 'WOOHOO, FIRE SALE!'. I'm also glad it happened today, since I got paid on Friday and my investments don't go final until the following Monday. So...bargain?

Wow, so it all has be in the same "kind" of account...I guess that sort of makes sense. What is a non-admiral version of that fund? I didn't know about this, or that there were two types. From what I can see on Vanguard, apparently these admiral funds are some special kind of "bulk rate" fund.

Just buy VTSMX, when your contributions and/or gains reach 10,000 Vanguard will convert them to VTSAX shares, and the only thing that will change is the price per share and the expense ratio.

Things look a little grim if I just look at my investment accounts, but overall the picture isn't so bad.  Real estate prices here have been jumping like crazy, just about offsetting our paper losses on stocks with paper gains on real estate equity.  Looking at total net worth, we're back down to where we were like three/four months ago when the market was at the all time high, not that big of a deal.

Turns out diversification is actually worth something after all.  Who knew?

Just checked PC after today's drop. Looks like we're down $11,000 since 8/17, so that's definitely my first 5-figure loss in my investment accounts since I started keeping track. Now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and fund my wife's IRA for the year or wait until tax time, like I planned.

I'd stick to the plan.  Not because I can see the future, but just because any deviations from the plan are just opportunities to get burned.

Ack! Now down $16k in the last two days!

Considering drawing down my line of credit to shove money at the market in advance of my paycheques. Someone convince me this is a bad idea.

I hope after today you can appreciate advice like @sols

We are now down more than $15K, and more importantly we are in need of a rebalance!  I'm going to try and hold out and not rebalance until DH's next 401-K deposit goes through.

I usually rebalance on january, if my % goes way off in between january and december, should I rebalance again or simply wait till january when I do my annual rebalancing?
