Gym workouts and showers
« on: January 02, 2016, 04:23:55 PM »
For the last 2 weeks my wife and I have been going to the gym in the mornings. We also have our showers at the gym so, we save on our bill for heating the hot water.
Of course she is an Ironman athlete and I am an office nudge.

We do the same every morning.  Might as well use the gym's hot water and shower vs using my own.  Plus it allows us to put our electric HW heater on an automatic timer so it only runs for an hour or two each night just to keep the water warm after work.

But make sure to wear sandals all the time!  Plantars warts beware!  Don't ask me how I learned that one the hard way....

Nice, and yeah, why not? Doubles the value of the gym membership!

Your wife is bad ass!!!

Do you guys ever argue about her spending on triathlons? Just curious.

I typically work out on lunch in my workplace gym and don't get sweaty, so I just change back into my work clothes after.  I do a fairly easy workout (brisk walking, elliptical, biking, etc.)

Yes, she is quite the badass athlete. She just finished her first full Iron last year and I've lost count of how many marathons she's run.  No, we never argue about that.  Being an athlete is her love in life and I enjoy accompanying her on trips to races. ... mini vacations.
She does spend a bunch on it but, we both feel it's a more rewarding investment than if the money was put in high yield funds.
We are still in good shape for retirement so, I don't mind.

I've found that ultra marathons are a better value  in miles per dollar, but I haven't been able to convince my marathoning friends to even try one.

I've been considering this and can't think of a reason why I shouldn't. I already have the YMCA membership (it's a 5 min walk from my work) and already take a bag with toiletries for my lunch workout.  I take my son to daycare each morning, but that ends in May so going to give it a shot after that.

I shower at my gym, too. Course it helps that I live in my car, which doesn't have a shower. Not having an apartment or house saves on the power bill.

I see about 1/4 of the guys in there walk around barefoot. Once in a while I'll forget my flip flops and go right back out to the car for them. No WAY am I walking around in that locker/shower area barefoot.

Are you living in the car by choice? I know lots of folks that have done it part time bumming around the snowboard and climbing spots but it's more of an outdoor guy choice vs a save money choice.

On this topic, I have showers at my work and gym. I use the office ones regularly when I bike in but hadn't considered it an energy saving method. More of a scheduling thing than money savings, but interesting nonetheless. Makes me thing of a new thread. :D

Yes, I am doing it by choice. I did it for two months but caved in and got an apartment. Cheapest I could find local was 1715 per month for a 436 sq ft studio apartment. I've been in it for 3 months but moving out again, hopefully this time for much longer.

The rest of my life: marriage, work, city, etc is well set up for this kind of life, and it's doable without a lot of pain so I'm taking advantage.

Your wife is a killer.  Level of commitment is extremely high for competing in a Full Ironman.

That's awesome! I used to do the same thing when my utilities weren't included in my condo fee. You're already paying for it, might as well take advantage!

I just realized something...one of my favorite things to do is to take advantage.

I always shower at the gym too and I time my hair washing to make sure I do it at the gym and not at home. Not only to save on water but it (selfishly) means that it isn't me that has to clean the long hair out of the drain. So I think of it as getting hot water AND a cleaning service! These wonderful benefits haven't been enough to convert my partner to showering there though (at least he has short hair that doesn't clog the drains). Apparently the open plan nature of the showers isn't his style.

For me, the energy saved by taking hot showers at the gym is possibly exceeded by the energy saved drying my hair there.

My gym has a great custodial staff. The locker room and showers are generally hair and grunge-free. I don't even mind walking around barefoot occasionally. The members appreciate the staff so much that at Christmas one of them takes up a collection for them. This year they got over $600 each!

Cool. I'm training for my first half iron. I try to keep my spending in check.... but.... :p

Couldn't we all  move into, like, one bigass car together?

Except one, who would be the one to rent an apartment and we could all come over for showers and stuff and on Christmas give that one, like, six hunnert bux!  For all the hair and gross goo and stuff.

We get free use of the workout facilities at the college where my husband works.  So, free gym membership/equipment AND a free shower!! I get a free locker and keep my free shampoo samples, a towel, flip flops and some toiletries there all the time.

I would consider showering at work if I had to pay for my own hot water usage at home. Heck, I did that for a few years once even with free utilities at the place I was renting purely for convenience - I started work at 6 or 6:30am and bike commuted, so it was just the most convenient thing. I use cold water for everything at home, so I once went a week without realizing the hot water in my building was out - when I eventually noticed on my day off and asked my neighbor about it, he looked at me like I was nuts for not knowing.

I showered for many years at the gym. Get up , workout shower and go. Really need to get my DW willing to do this as it only makes sense. She has her little quirks as I am sure i do to. Give and take :-)

You guys are better than me.  I like my long baths.

My ex used to do this.  For me it was too much of a pain to try and plan my showers around my workouts, and I just don't want to shower with a lot of other people or where a lot of other people have been.  I guess I probably drove him crazy in that regards as he is much more frugal than I will ever be.

I kinda have no choice but to plan my showers around my workouts...since I'm usually pretty sweaty after a workout.
