Got rid of the extra fridge ... YES !!
« on: November 15, 2015, 08:08:17 AM »
Married with 5 kids, who are now flying the coop.  We kept an old fridge in the garage for extra food, drinks, beer, freezer space.
When the kids were younger it was great.  We'd buy food in bulk, on sale, etc and keep the extra out there.
Also great for keeping cold beers for a break doing yardwork!  : )

Anyway, last week I finally took it to our transfer station.  More space in the garage, one less appliance running al the time.
The big thing is psychological. Before, we tended to over-buy at the grocery store and keep extra food in this fridge.
Our food budget was way bigger than it had to be and often we ended up throwing away frozen meats that was over a year old.
Back to one fridge.  This will help us with disciplined food buying!

: )

I guess it's too late now, but did you check to see if your electric utility co will pay you to get rid of it?  I know mine will pay $50.

1. Move to Canada
2. Check that it's between November and May.
3. Place beer etc on basement floor in cold-storage room, or garage.
4. Enjoy free refrigeration.

Or just use the back deck.
And yet, many Canadians do employ 2nd fridges . . . Huh.

Nice one, old fridges use a colossal amount of electricity.

My dad recently got rid of a fridge that would have been over 50 years old. Whilst it was replaced by another newer smaller fridge, I'm sure their power bill may have dropped accordingly.

To the OP, awesome job ditching the 2nd fridge.   That'll cut $50USD of the utility bill EVERY month and is one of the most unappreciated ways to increase your monthly cash flow out there.   The true badass way is to get a smaller, high efficiency primary fridge once the kids move out and maybe get a small deep freezer unit if you want to buy bulk on frozen food.

Or you can do what we did and buy a small "dorm sized" fridge for outside beverage storage.  The after-yardwork beer tastes just as good pulling it from an efficient small fridge as a full sized, expensive one!

I can't recall the exact figure now, but I got paid a few bucks to get rid of my old one, and then I got a $100 credit for buying a new, efficient model.

I ended up paying the local transfer station $10 to take.  I just didn't want to wait anymore ... impulse move.  It's nice having a little extra room in the garage too.

This thread makes me feel the tiniest bit guilty about wanting a chest freezer.  I suppose they have very different uses.  But in my apartment, it doesn't matter!  Forced savings through lack of space. :P
