Wooooo.
I live in Chicago, and cars aren't really a necessity. I've been wanting to ditch it for a while, but haven't had an opportunity. I barely drove it; it seemed like half my trips were moving it to avoid street cleaning.
Over the weekend, my dad visited. He arrived by train, and left via car.
I'm so pumped!
Instead of a car I have two bicycles (a beater, and a decent one) and a Divvy (Chicago's bike share) subscription. I also have a bike trailer (BOB Yak, bought used for $150, although I haven't actually used it yet). I also just signed up for iGo (a car share service. There was a $25 sign up fee, but I get $75 worth of free driving credit).
This weekend a friend is having a Labor Day party out in the suburbs, about 25 miles from my house. I plan to bike there (hey, I biked 74 miles on Sunday, this should be cake!).
No more parking tickets. No more city stickers. No more oil changes. No more car insurance. Freedom!
