Got my brother into investing!
« on: July 19, 2016, 11:43:48 AM »
So a couple of weeks ago my family all got together for a holiday in France and I got to spend lots of catch up time with my brother.

I knew that if I sat him down to lecture him about passive investing he might not get too excited about it - so I decided to drop hints as to what the results can be.
Over the holiday my funds increased by a decent percentage and I made a point of saying "oh my funds increased £XXX overnight - awesome"
He then started asking me a few questions and I explained just how simple it all is.

Cue message at the weekend from my brother "Hi, i've done lots of stock and bond research, can't wait to open my account"

Hooray!!! - we then had a long messaging conversation about funds and stock/bond splits, fees and strategies.
Glad to have my bro on-board! :D

Has anyone else got friends / family into investing?

Isn't this an awesome feeling? I turned my sister on to MMM. She was sitting on a pile of money after she graduated college in 2015 (she worked a lot, and our dad payed tuition), and I convinced her to throw $5500 into a Roth IRA. Then she just called me recently and asked if she should throw another $5500 in this year since she's built it back up and then some, while still sitting on $10k+ in cash. I was so proud :)

Nice one!

I had to take a different path... basically set up the broker account for my brother, asked him to throw all his cash in there and I logged in and bought the Vanguard shares for him.

He was mildly bemused that it had gone up of the past 3 weeks. He's happy enough letting me handle the purchases (and the paperwork!!).
