Got excited, stripped naked and lubed up . . .
« on: January 06, 2014, 06:23:30 AM »
. . . my bike hubs this weekend.  The rear one was making some weird noises so I learned how to pull them apart and regreased with some marine grade water resistant stuff (which is supposed to be good down to -40).  Also had to replace the bearings as a couple of them were cracked.  Then, as I was on a roll I replaced my chain (starting to stretch too far), took apart and cleaned the cassette, re-aligned the brake pads, and tightened up some loose spokes.

I'm excited for my next ride now!

Nice job. Nice that you actually caught the chain, most people let it go so long they up having to replace the cassette and even chain rings a lot of times which gets expensive.

Woohoo! Rebuilding bike hubs is fun, and way easier than a car's.

Nothing better than clean balls. I assume you checked the cones since the bearings were that messed up?

The rear hub is a bit scraped, but doesn't appear cracked anywhere.  Probably best to replace that at some point in the future.  The wheel is turning MUCH better than it was from my last commute.  Looks like I'll be testing the -30 claim on the grease tomorrow, as it's supposed to be -34 in the morning with "life-threatening" (according to the weather network) wind chill.
