Got an iPhone
« on: March 21, 2013, 09:30:44 AM »
Picked up an iPhone 3g (didn't realize there was a 3gs with video. Oh well) for the $10/month Airvoice Wireless plan! I'm still waiting on my number to port over from Virgin Mobile. I have super crappy coverage with Virgin Mobile, and according to the coverage map with Airvoice, I should have much better coverage. That is the really important part. I'm pretty excited. People get super curious when I mention a $10/mo iPhone plan, so I tell them about it :)

Anyway, monthly bill will go from $37.73 to $10! $20 when I find my husband a good deal on an iPhone and switch him over (he's still on his parent's plan, lol)

Do be careful with that iPhone 3G, there's unpatched security vulnerabilities in the version of iOS it's running, partly due to the device being EOL (end of life) for two years now.

Congrats on the switch to Airvoice, though.

I have that phone & I am in the process of switching it to ptel.  Of what should I be careful and how? (Don't know what the article means by "malicious TIFF files.")

Malicious TIFF files are basically TIF image files embedded with malicious code. The biggest concern will be jailbreaking your device and using third party applications located from the non-Apple marketplace, with a minor concern toward web browsing. For the non-technical: be cautious about what you download, what you install, and where you surf. Apple doesn't support you anymore, so any and all of the security patches that have been applied to iOS since 2011 haven't been applied to you.

By the way, I like the avatar. Made me do a double-take there for a moment as mine was that very same Tick screencap before I switched to the current one last October.

No worries! :D

Feel free to keep the Tick one with my encouragement... someone's gotta have that mustache feelin'!

Thanks for the info. I won't do a lot of web browsing, and definitely won't log in to any banking sites or anything of importance on it. I'll be sure to get my husband at least a 3gs.

What about using whited00r for updated software?

Sounds similar to running Android on the device. Alternate firmwares, if cautiously used with sufficient research, can be a benefit for legacy hardware. I'm unfamiliar with Whited00r myself, so I can't recommend one way or the other, but it does appear to be a valid option.

Zoe, did you manage to get Kik for <4.3 at Whited00r?  Can you post a link?

I am still messing with this phone. We've gotten it all the way up to the point of having Whited00r installed, but then ran into the No Service problem. I'm still trying to figure it out. I think it's currently stuck in a loop right now /sigh.

But, I did read that Kik is available through the App time machine. Oh, Whited00r runs off an updated version of 3.1.3. So initially I thought it downgraded me, but they say it's faster than the 4.2.x that I was on.

I'll update if/when I get this figured out. I really should go to bed now.

Update: Jailbreaking and Whited00r work, sorta. I got all that done but was still getting No Service. I need my phone active today so I just restored it back to the original firmware. I was originally going to update it so I could run a free texting app. Well, I searched the app store and found one that works with my phone! TextNow is a free text AND calling app. It gives you a new number to use, and as long as all your contacts use it, you shouldn't pay anything. There is a small ad at the bottom of the chat screen, but it's barely noticeable.

So, in theory, as long as all my contacts use the TextNow number and I used only free wifi, shouldn't I pay $0/month if I dropped down to the pay as you go on AirVoice?

Looks like an equally to more privacy invasive form of Google Voice with an integrated VoIP app, truthfully. Read their privacy policy and terms of use (you are definitely the service being provided, not the other way around), but theoretically yes from what I can tell.

Afraid not. Free services like that? You're the service being provided to advertisers... you're just getting compensated in text messages and VoIP telephone minutes for your usage.

Congrats on the switch to Airvoice, though.

Be afraid, Zoe, the cyberspaces are going to invade your phone with their tubes!!!

Yes, let us be flippant and not exercise any form of prudence or caution about security on an unsupported device that people treat like a wallet.

Bravo, sir!

I'm ditching the iPhone 3 and those apps. The 4 is okay though, right?

Zoe NO! If you use the internet you are exposing yourself to all sorts of risks like virii and keyloggers and Russian spies and their cyberattacks. It's best to just stick with a landline and only in emergencies because you do not want the hackers to steal your identity through the phone lines!

Zoe, no!  I need someone to suffer through this with me!  Whited00r kicked my butt today.  Wasted 3-4 hours on it.  :(

Jill, no way! I wasted many, many hours of my life messing with whited00r and redsn0w, only to be left with no service.

Tuyop? I know you're a goon, but this isn't SA... let alone the GBS or FYAD boards. Kindly behave yourself. ;)

Ouch.  I am going to take a lesson from your experience and knock it off now.  But, the process of converting to ptel is really going great: two phones done, maybe one to go.  Thanks, Daley!

Oh, yeah -- I made a pair of victory earrings:
