Got a $50 Amazon gift card and don't know what to buy
« on: September 07, 2017, 11:32:17 AM »
I got a $50 Amazon gift card at work today as a reward for a job well done. The best part of it? There is absolutely nothing that I want to buy.

Most people think of frugality as depriving yourself from buying things, but to me this was the ultimate proof that it is all about learning to being satisfied with what you already have. Pre-MMM me would have list of things lined up for future purchases that this $50 would make shorter. Today me is content and at peace and would probably prefer to shop things second-hand anyway. This is a good day.

That's great! I'm glad your work appreciates you also.

Perhaps you could just by regular household goods with it. Laundry detergent, paper towels, that sort of stuff. I hate getting gift cards lol.

I'd just hang onto it until you need it instead of looking for something (even frugal) to buy. Don't let it burn a hole in your pocket! :-)

Just load it to your account and wait until you need something. They don't go bad.

I usually use Amazon gift cards to buy an e-gift card for groceries (such as Whole Foods or Safeway) if I don't have any upcoming purchases.

I mostly just stack up household goods for this kind of
situation, i.e. put stuff in my cart, then "save for later".

I usually order dry goods that are price-competitive with
whatever I can buy locally -- free shipping is awesome.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. You are absolutely right, I'll probably just end up using it for some household goods. :)

Amazon regularly has good deals on toiletry, cleaning items etc. I keep an eye in Slickdeals to see what pops up. Would be of good use then instead of just buying random stuff.

I would keep it for the next gift-giving occasion and regift it.

First congrats!

I have the same issue. - I find I neither need nor want anything most of the time!

I have a child in college so will use Amazon gift cards for her textbooks (used or rented) which I return when she's done (sometimes via other websites that buy books) and get some money back again. Or, I use to buy gifts for others' (birthdays, Christmas). I am going to a baby shower next month so already have the gift in hand (no cost to me).  If I actually need something I am more likely to wait till I find the item at a yard sale (I prefer getting it for pennies on the dollar - right now I am wearing a pair of shoes I LOVE which cost me a whole dollar at a yard sale - last week picked up a floodlight for outside my home for $2 (new, in box)).

Freedom!!

I use it for dog food.  There's always basic necessities that come up.

Good books-good chocolate-good wine:)

...but if that is not your thing, re-gift it or sell it online for cold hard cash.
Groceries and household items are way cheaper locally over what amazon offers them for.

I get quite a lot of Amazon vouchers (I do competitions and stuff) and I save them all up and use them to buy Christmas presents. Hope you get to use it in a way that's helpful to you :-)
