Getting rid of a carload of "stuff"
« on: May 10, 2016, 12:42:43 PM »
I'm hoping to retire in about a year and go traveling so I need to get rid of most of my stuff that's been accumulating for 12-20 years.

I mentioned to a friend that I want to get rid of a bunch of household items and she teaches at a school in a very poor neighborhood that basically has a thrift shop where everything is free to those that need it.  So - there goes a whole bunch of stuff - lots of kitchenware, etc!  I probably could have sold some of it but it's just not worth the hassle.

My goal is to get rid of at least 1 carload of stuff each month for the next year.

Over the last couple years I've been doing the same thing basically.  Decided to downsize our house and get rid of all the crap that I don't use, with the intent to only keep things that I actively enjoy.  I couldn't believe how much shit I had stashed away!  And this is coming from someone who has had to move for work every few years or so.  I thought I was living fairly lean until I actually dug into it.  I sold anything that was worth the effort, and gave away a shit ton of things.  The awkward part now is that I have pretty much everything I need / want for the time being.  So when people give me gifts (I try to ask for consumables like food items only if they insist on gift giving, but it's hard wired for some people) the new stuff generally goes into a box immediately to be re-gifted/sold.

To be honest, I don't even remember the stuff that I gave away anymore.  It literally has had no negative impact on my life what-so-ever.

Yeah - it's hard.  I'm holding on to something saying this cost me $20 (or $40 or whatever) but realized I haven't used it once in 5 years.  It's hard to give it away but it has to go sometime.  I'm sure not going to pay for a storage locker for all this stuff.

We have just done this and sold everything on online website and at the end we listed it as free outsid our address on the weekends to get rid of the final items. Very easy.

Nice.
We've been on a Konmari purge taking carloads every week to the local charity shop.  It's awesome.  Now that we've purged the things we don't use or need, I'm thinking of sending some of what gets rarely used and could be acquired via the thrift store or CL in the future.
Like the canoe.  We don't use it every year.  If I store it on Ebay or Craigslist, I'm pretty sure it'll be there when we want it again.  I tight even be a newer, better canoe.
