Thinking of teaching English abroad, but wondering what the commitment is like. I know there are different programs/companies that arrange these work situations and i'm sure they vary... but wondering could i do a 3 month assignment? 1 month? 6 month?
Any feedback would be much appreciated!!
Generally it's a one-year commitment. There are occasional short-term gigs teaching during summer or winter camps (kids). These are common in Korea and China, are typically illegal, and employer quality varies. Spain has programs for immersion English teaching, Nora of The Professional Hobo has written about it.
For up to date info on ESL teaching, go to daveseslcafe.com or similar. Unless you get a Masters or PhD it's a dead end career, better as a retirement or sabbatical gig. It's useful as a financially sustainable and cheap way to to get to a region where there's a middle class large enough to create a market for native English teachers.
Edit: There's also a slew of volunteer English teaching positions available worldwide of varying timeframes.
