Fun with sewing
« on: January 07, 2014, 03:22:06 AM »
I have a very not-often-used sewing machine.  But, busted it out to help with a cub scout project and then…. tried to hem a pair of pants that had a hole in the knee to make shorts.  They turned out pretty nice.  (I have three young sons and holes in the knees happen quite a bit around here.)   It was satisfying and I may try to learn to do some tailoring / sewing as a new skill.  --Karen

hi.  I did the same thing last year, rediscovered I had a sewing machine. This was after I took a dress to the alterations place at the local shopping centre. The quote for a putting in a  new zipper was more than I had spent on buying the dress. As I had never done this before , after a 4 minute lesson from you tube I easily did what I thought for years
was certainly beyond my capabilites. Keep going with this,it's a great skill to have, congratulations .

Youtube is amazing for these things. I probably would have done better with a video.  I have been learning how to do the kids birthday cakes through youtube and pinterest and it's been fun. Not necessarily saving that much money, but making homemade cakes makes them feel special.

My sister needed mum's help making a skirt for a costume over Christmas, so I thought it'd be fun to make one too. It's still waiting to be hemmed, but I also got help letting out a dress I thought was too difficult because the skirt was gathered. It was a lot easier than I thought!

I actually sew quite a bit. The most valuable repair at our house is stitching up little girls tights that have holes in the toes. Takes about 30s and saves $5.

I've also learned to sew my own swimsuits and have found a pretty cheap source of chlorine proof fabric. I can make myself a suit for under $20 and it will last forever. Way better than $70 for a suit that only lasts a year.

Sewing is a hobby that needs to make a comeback... it can be fun, and you make stuff that is useful. What's not to love?

I learned to sew in my early 20s, and I'm maybe a few hairs above beginner, but not by much. I've still managed to make my own clothes, halloween costumes, curtains, pillows, and repair hems, holes and zippers and all sorts of stuff.

Even the most simple sewing, just a straight line, saves massive amounts of money.  I'm short so have to hem all my op-shop bought pants, which saves $16 a pair. I recently upgraded the dog's indoor bed, basically a large flat pillow, with $2 of curtain fabric, it was very easy, took me about an hour.

I just recently picked up sewing again after a few decade hiatus.  It certainly isn't saving me money overall, but it's a great hobby that allows me to be creative and have something useful as an end result.  My skill level has increased to such that I'm now able to sew items that I deem worthy enough to wear to my corporate job - I have a colleague that is my "homemade" dectector in case I might over-inflate my own talents!  I'm having a blast re-discovering this talent!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
