Frugally finishing a degree
« on: April 30, 2014, 10:47:49 AM »
This is my wife's badassity, but I had to share:

She took a couple years off from getting her BA, and now she's ready to finish up.

She applied to the flagship university in town and transferred her credits over. About 60% of her credits transferred, and it was going to cost about $35,000 to finish. We had taken it as fact that she would finish at this well-known university, but the price tag gave her pause.

She started researching inexpensive no-name options, knowing full well that it's silly to pay for pedigree when you're only planning on working for another 7 years. She found a perfectly serviceable local university--and the cost per credit is HALF what the flagship U charges.

She transferred her credits over and--surprise!--they took 100% of them. The less a university relies on brand, the more transfer credits they accept. Who knew?

It's going to cost a total of $8,000 to finish the degree, including books and fees. That's $27,000 less than we originally estimated. Amazing.

Awesome!! Good for you!!! I went to the "cheaper" less glamorous school in town and saved thousands of $$$ in the process.  The funny thing is, combined with a little work experience, I now have a better job than all the people who went to expensive school down the road.  After a few years of work experience, nobody is even going to care where you graduated from.

Excellent!

I had a young engineer working for me from an Ivy League school.. One of the worse engineers I've ever come across!
