Freegan with out a trash bin.
« on: April 09, 2013, 05:47:09 PM »
We've now been at this thing for a while. Every now and again we get a chance for another level up.

Most recently it's been really maximizing the access to free food that we're blessed to have. Both DW and I have free food left around us daily. My haul isn't the best, but I'm regularly given access to sandwiches or sandwich fixin's, salads, sodas, bottles of water, coffee, and  hors d'oeuvres. There's also a lot of pizza, pasta, cookies, and breakfast pastries that I'm allergic to so don't eat.

Wify on the other hand has quite to boon. Her work caters lunch and dinner everyday. She's even welcome to order two dinners so that i can join her, or she can bring the bounty home. She also fills as many of her work provided togo containers as will fit in her bag for easy bike travel home. She usually focuses on meat, at times bringing home several pounds of prepared, boneless chicken. This get's bagged and frozen for soup or other food preparation. We haven't bought meat in weeks at this point. We're now expanding into cheese, sour cream, chopped onions (last night's score went right into the soup) and all sorts of easy to use staple products, including bringing our own containers when a decent seal is needed.

I soak beans for soup over the weekend and the biggest drawback can be that i just made a huge pot of soup and then she comes home with food every day of the week! Not exactly a problem... I make sure to keep the freezer full of things we eat VS things we stock up and never get around to eating. Still have plenty of room for all of it, with the frozen fruit for smoothies, gluten-free bread items, and various bags of veggies clippings and bones for future stock. I find a little time to keep everything organized and rotated to keep older items used first only takes a few min every week. Boxes get date and contents marked on the top to help me track everything as week after week I'm not able to keep it all straight.

Just an idea... You might be surrounded by perfectly good food that is about to be thrown away, but hasn't made it's way to the bin just yet.
Happy Hunting!

Oh man that is an incredible deal.

I'm not usually that lucky. Normally its a couple of pieces of uneaten cake left in the work kitchen. Occasionally there is a catered training session or afternoon tea but lunch and dinner I wish.

A few months back I watched many of the "freegans" videos on (yeap you already guessed it) youtube. It was not for me.

Sounds like you got quite the deal going though since your not looking in the Bins...

I do occasionally get free meal when company holding a major event (normally once or twice a year). Beside that, I have not much luck in getting free food like you.

I do picked up a lot of coin from the street. ^^

Local hotels bring in free food where I work on a daily basis but it's all junk food like cookies and donuts.

A meal is often provided if you attend meetings and certain clubs in my department.  I probably average a free meal a week, and sometimes leftovers for lunch the next day too:)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
