Found a steal on Craigslist, here begins my home gym journey!
« on: November 27, 2013, 01:21:05 PM »
I found a STEAL on Craigslist for some used weights and weight lifting equipment.

Basically, it consisted of:
1 pretty sturdy adjustable bench press.
1 Olympic bar
3 smaller bars
6 dumbell bars

About 400 lbs of solid iron weights, from 45 lbs down to 2.5 lbs.
About 150 lbs of plastic filled weights.

All this for $150!  Goodbye fancy pants gym membership!

I'll post pics of the haul in the next few days.

My next addition will be a pullup bar / squat rack.  Not sure If i should build one, or look for a cheap one.

It would be cheaper to make it, especially with your own welder. Couldn't be more than 55' of angle iron, only part that would suck would be needing to drill a bazillion holes all lined up nicely for the pins and catches.

Good job on the purchase, under $.50/pound is a good take!

I made a small pull-up bar and squat rack from 1" steel threaded pipe and fittings. It wasn't as cheap as I thought. Using raw-er materials might cut down the price.

Angle iron would be nice to use, but I lack the tools (and welding skills) to do that at the moment.  I'll have to stick with wood and pipe.

My thought was to use some 4x4 lumber, then drill 2-3 sets of angled holes into the posts.  I'd have to come up with some sort of way to keep the metal pipe in the hole. The bottom could either be anchored to my cement floor with some anchors and bolts and angle brackets, or free standing which would be easier.

After Googling, looks like someone has made what I was thinking already.  I'd probably make mine a bit smaller though.  I like the idea of being able to put the weights on the side, I may incorporate that.

look on google for gyms made out of pvc pipes, it's a bit easier to work with I think, and should hold your weight :S it flexes under my weight enough that a 8' bar becomes something like 7.5' once I'm on it

it needs to be replaced every once in a while since the bend doesn't come out, but for a few dollars for a new bar, it still comes out ahead.

I used this site, http://www.artofmanliness.com/2013/03/21/how-to-build-the-ultimate-bodyweight-gym-using-only-pvc-pipe/ to start from. I think I saw it posted on MMM actually before >.<

I don't think I could be any more jealous. You are a lucky duck!!!! I'm going to send that link to my husband and see if he will build me a lovely wood squat rack.  Can't wait to see the pictures!

That rack is very nice looking. You probably want some sort of safety catch system, since your plates are not rubber unless you have a spotter or are much more conservative than I in picking your weights. You could also bolt together angle iron, though I have never actually seen one like this. my rack is bolted together but it's square tube iron (also purchased not home made).

THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!

I think I'm going to do this over Christmas break. I've wanted to work out for so long but know full well I won't go to the actual gym to do this... only concern is going to be floor footprint. Must be about 8 foot by 8 foot?

you can make it smaller if you want. Mine isn't all that big, It's mostly just a pull up bar/clothes hanger when I'm not using it. So it just stands about 8 feet high and about 4 feet wide. It's about 4 feet deep for the legs so it doesn't tilt over on me. It's basically a rectangle standing on it's side with a bar in the middle of the top that I grab onto.

It makes for a decent table if I need one quickly. Turn it on the side, throw a piece of ply wood ontop and cover it with a curtain.

That is an awesome find and awesome price!  Got my Olympic bar and two 30# bumper plates off CL for 120$.  And have been adding to it as needed.

I have been dreaming of building my own power rack out of wood, but space and gf issues prevent :-(

http://www.home-gym-bodybuilding.com/homemade-power-rack.html  definitely very solid and plenty strong.  Really like it for the built in pull up bar.

I posted a thread of my DIY pull up bar in the badassity section a few weeks ago, if you're looking for easy ideas.

Thanks _JT, I had actually seen your post on the DIY pullup bar before.  I think something like that will be my next addition.

So far the only downfall to my basement gym is that the ceiling is low, so can't do too much overhead stuff.  I did do some dumbell step ups on the staircase... probably not the best idea!

If your staircase will hold you, it should be fine for step ups, unless it's poorly constructed. :)

I use a box with phone books for step ups :S books by self slide out from me so I put them in a box. Seems to work fine, city drops off a phone book every year too.

Not so much worried about the staircase breaking. I am more worried about falling down half a flight of stairs, backwards, while holding 40 lbs of iron.  Ouch!

I got a similarly badass deal off craigslist last year.  I built a squat stand outside out of 2x4 s (not a full rack, just a stand).  I had to find a few used weights to fill n some gaps.  And the bench was too tall so I surplused it.  Recently, as my first welding projects I built metal legs for a wooden-topped bench and made squat racks out of 2x2 metal.  Total cost for the metal was $55.  Not bad for a pair ofsquat stands.  The welding job was ugly, but functional.  Drilling holes for brackets to hold the bar (brackets purchased from rogue fitness) was a pain, but I only drilled two sets of holes - one for squats/overhead press and another for bench presses.  I would have gone nuts drilling holes every two inches.  The main benefit for me of squat stands instead of a wooden power rack is the ability to move it all out of the way (I.e., no dedicated space available).

Ah, yes. I was thinking you were just stepping up on the bottom few steps and then back down to the ground.
