Fixed the dryer today!
« on: February 21, 2014, 08:22:43 PM »
Dryer wasn't heating - so, with some trepidation I started looking up the issue online, while MrsTX hunted down the exploded view of the parts.

Got the back off, lots of multimeter testing and traced it down to a broken heating element (there are also 4 other things in the likely category. Mostly thermostats/overtemperature protection stuff)

New OEM part locally for $60, clean out lint while I have it torn down... and it works again!

First time tacking a dryer.

Good for you!  You are right to be proud of yourself for that.

I've fixed our dryer twice in the past 23 years.  First time was one of those overheating sensors that had gone bad.  Second time was the timer unit.  Both were easy repairs but I am still proud of myself for identifying and fixing the problems.  Gotta say that the basic GE washer and dryer my parents gave us for a wedding present in 1991 was an excellent gift.  (Hope I didn't just jinx that!)

Fixed my dryer today!

It was throwing off a "stuck key" error code, beeping at random and shutting off after ~30 seconds repeatedly, but per various threads online that means a control board failure... except that replacing the board didn't fix the problem. Failed again after a week, under warranty.

I found this thread:

...borrowed a soldering iron, soldered a new resistor to my original board, swapped it back in for the failed board, and it works! Getting to return the replacement board under warranty. Total fix cost < $10, vs $100 for the board that didn't fix the problem, or hundreds for a new dryer.
