Fixed my clothes dryer!
« on: June 22, 2022, 06:24:39 PM »
Clothes dryer making freaky noises so I immediately stopped drying my clothes and watched a YouTube video on how to troubleshoot the problem. Hubby ordered parts (belt, drum wheels) from Amazon (not OEM parts) and took apart the machine today. Dryer is fixed! Hopefully this will make it last a bit longer (dryer is 10 years old)

Been air drying all my clothes for a week. I’m sure I’m saving a bit on the electricity bill

Nicely done! Also, maybe you can continue some air drying, sort of a double win.

Yes thank you! I’m going to add a bit more laundry softener and air dry more clothes in the future. There is some stuff I really do need to machine dry though so I’m glad It’s fixed. Also - I live in Canada with winter. Really tough to line dry during the winter

Isn't it the best feeling? Not just the victory over the repair, but the knowledge gained.

Awesome job!  I thought my dryer belt was bad, watched a youtube video of a technician working on my exact model and realized it was the ballbearing.  Ordered the parts, and replaced the belt too since we had to take it all apart anyway.  I took the opportunity to clean out all the lint inside the dryer and up the exhaust.  The dryer went from needing 2x cycles (or more!) to just a single cycle.  I found out one of the things that makes the bearing go is too much heat buildup in the drum caused by... a vent blocked by exhaust.  So I felt great from having repaired it, but bad because I was wasting electricity and damaging the dryer in the first place by letting lint accumulate in the exhaust.  If you want or need to try it, what I got was a drill powered air vent cleaner from the local big box hardware store.  Super cheap and effective.

Yes to cleaning the lint out, so much gets past the  screen and just packs in everywhere. Dryers are pretty simple, really.
Great job repairing it, next time you'll have lots of confidence to repair it again (if needed).

It’s amazing how plugged they can be and yet still work, though with reduced efficiency.

Our outlet is really high outside, glad it’s a short run, making it easier to rationalize not cleaning it.

Mine was less than 8 feet. From the dryer at the basement floor, to a basement window.  So probably 7 feet, and two 90° bends.  But there was also a lot of lint inside the unit too.

Lol, our basic 10-year-old dryer just went out today. It's the timer. DH tried to repair the part, but no dice. He ordered a new one via Prime and it will be here tomorrow. I'd been bugging him to clean the hose out for a while, so he did that while he had the dryer apart. Not much lint, which was good, but he found five or six nails. Best we can figure is they came from his mom. She had ALZ and lived with us. She liked to go to the flip house with us (a full gut reno). She liked to sweep and would happily do so for hours. Trouble is, she'd stuff her pockets with all manner of treasures while we were busy doing other things. I was pretty good at checking her pockets before doing laundry, but I'm pretty sure that's where they came from.

Best day ever was my freshman year in college, back in the very late 80s. Went to clean lint filter in dorm laundry room (always a lovely place) and found a twenty dollar bill.

Something saved from the landfill! Of course being steel, much of it would be recycled. Congrats!

Clean that lint. Wow, is it ever flammable!
