First oil change in a long time!
« on: February 13, 2016, 11:43:42 AM »
It's been a while. I'm a reformed 'car guy' and in the past did plenty of mods to my vehicles. For a while there though jiffy lube and the like were so cheap I don't know how they made a profit aside from upselling suckers on overpriced 'dirty' air filters and so on.

However the area I live in now my wife took her vehicle to get the oil changed and they charged her $77! (oil, filter and synthetic oil) Never again!

Oil change reminder came on in my jeep and my son is in the 'can I help?' stage so I figured it was time for him to start with that. Changing oil wasn't hard before but holy crap it's now even easier! The filter just has a cover you screw off and pop a new one in (don't have to screw the filter itself out, drain it separately anymore, etc.) and they've redesigned the drain plugs so you can get them unscrewed all the way without oil leaking out.

Seriously easy and so fast compared to days of old. Fun for my son as well, he had a great time helping.

Good job including your son! Learning skills from dad when he wants to include you (and doesn't get pissed at you when things go bad) makes great memories. Seriously, keep doing this. Some of my favorite memories are when dad let me tag along with him at work or doing something.

$77 is a lot for an oil change. The guy I go to charges about $42 (he's a family friend. I like him to look at my car periodically since my car ability is about level 3 out of 200).

We were getting into the jeep today and he says, "Remember when we changed the oil? That was my favorite day." Not only saved some $$ but that's priceless.

You are doing this dad thing right if he said that to you :) My dad took me on a road trip for his job and we went about 100 miles. We talked about license plates, what each color meant they came from, and I began writing down the different colors and states that we saw. That was over 10 years ago. Every experience you give him is worth the time in gold.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
