We recently moved to central NY where our current bank has no branches. Since we rarely write any checks, and we have our mortgage with the current bank, we decided to keep that checking account but also open something more local primarily to have ATMs we could use without fees.
Key Bank has a number of branches nearby and they were offering a $300 sign-up bonus. So why not? Sign up, change direct deposit of my paycheck into the new account, set up a few bill payments, collect the bonus. So I emailed them and got the code for the $300 promotion.
Following their instructions I tried to sign up online but kept getting a computer error when trying to submit the application. A bit frustrating but, what the heck, I'll just go to the branch. Once there, the rep had trouble getting our app submitted. She had to back out twice and re-enter all our info before it finally took. I asked, "did the promo code get applied to the account" and became concerned when she said she couldn't tell. The branch manager wasn't in but she'd follow up to make sure we got it.
So I went home and looked at their facebook page. Every single post the bank makes is flooded with negative comments from pissed-off customers. It's so wildly negative that it is comical. Have a look (click on the replies to ANY of their posts):
https://www.facebook.com/keybank/?fref=tsGrowing more concerned I called their 800 customer service number. Nope, there is no promo code applied to my account. I would have to contact the branch. Which I did. Same answer, can't tell if the code is applied or not. I have to follow the requirements and then 90 days later the money would be paid. Or not. No way to tell.
So, I'll be canceling the account this week. I just got a mailer from Chase Bank for (guess what?) a $300 bonus to open a new checking account.
If you want a good laugh check out the comments on Key Bank. I had no idea a bank could be THAT bad.
