Finally on LEDs! For <$2 per bulb!
« on: April 10, 2016, 02:31:40 PM »
I've been itching to switch all my lights to LEDs, but due to the higher cost have been slowly switching as my incandescents burned out. When walking around Home Depot today, I noticed that they were selling a 4-pack of dimmable 60w equivelents (2700k) for $7.79. There was also a display advertising the same product for $19.97. I much preferred the lower price, so I hopped on their website to compare. The site confirmed $19.97.

I was a bit skeptical, but grabbed a $7.79 box and took it to the cashier. They rang it up for the $7.79 price. Delighted, I then went back into the store and bought 5 more boxes/20 bulbs. So all in, outfitted my whole house* with LED bulbs for $46!

*Still have those horrendous candelabra bulbs in certain fixtures that came with the house (a chandelier and a few ceiling fans)

Eco smart. Seems to be HD store brand but same manufacturer as Sylvania I believe.  Apparently had some recall issue a few years ago, but seem fine to me.

They make LED candelabra bulbs.  I have one in my bathroom and one as my computer desk light.

True, I shied away because they seem to be about 7 bucks each at the depot. However, I found some on Amazon for $3 each... I'll give them in a try in a ceiling fan. Thanks!

Dumb question: Do you need appliance/fan bulbs with LEDs?  I.e.: are they bothered by vibration?

Not sure what you mean. Are there different types of bulbs for appliances that vibrate?

Normally, yes.  A regular incandescent will have it's little filament shaken loose in short time.  I presume that LEDs are not vibration prone... but can't say I know that for sure.

LEDs are ok with vibration but not so good with heat.  I would think an LED bulb in an oven might be a problem.  Not in a refrigerator though.

Anything with a filament was impacted by vibration. If you shook one of the old incandescent bulbs, you see the filament move. That caused the filament to break away.

LED bulbs do not have a filament(solid state devices), but may still have wires etc (have not dissected an LED bulb yet) which are much less susceptible to vibration.

Anybody know of any good deals for 100W equivalent LED bulbs?  The wife likes a lot of light in the living room.

I would just google it. From a reputable source you should get something of reasonable quality. Keep in mind that a 100w incandescent gives off 1060 lumens or so. A 100w equivalent led is usually 1300. So you can actually get the same light output from a 75w equivalent (11w led).

For the benefit of anyone interested, I came across a good deal on Candelabra LED bulbs on Amazon by a USA-based company named G7. They are currently $2.99 a bulb and come in dimmable and non-dimmable versions. I bought the dimmables thinking "why not" if they were the same price even though I didn't need them. After testing in a non-dimming device, they emmitted a humming noise. After exchanging for the non-dimmable, the quality at first glance appears perfect.

According to online calculators, I should save about $30 a month off my electric bill after replacing all my bulbs. Break even in 3 months...

Our local electricity co-op just started offering heavily discounted LEDs for their customers, up to 24 bulbs per account. I picked up 9 BR30 floods and 4 regulars (all dimmable) for $28 with shipping.  Check your utility websites, you never know!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
