Finally did it...
« on: March 18, 2014, 10:22:43 PM »
Fellow mustacians. I've been toying with the idea of selling my yota pickup for a while now but my ambivalence has waned and I finally pulled the trigger and got what I considered to be a good price for an eleven year old truck (almost 13k).  We are now a one car (Prius) household and I'll be looking to replace the truck with something more fuel efficient for longer trips (short distances and commuting are covered by bike).  The current contenders are a Leaf, Fit, Focus, Versa and Prius.  Hoping to stash some cash from the transaction in the process.  My preferred criteria: good quality/reliability, 35 mpg highway minimum, less than $8k, less than 110k ish miles and hatchback/wagon design for ample gear hauling.  If we went with a leaf, the prius would be the road tripping car and we'd need to bring some cash to the table since the expected cost for a new leaf after rebates is around 16k.  However, it would potentially save money in the long run since we have solar PV installed and have a surplus in generation.

It feels weird to not have a car even although I was currently putting less than 3k per year on the truck.  Hopefully I won't miss the 4WD and clearance too much in the mountains.  I'll patiently wait for the right vehicle while also looking to maximize carpooling to ski resorts etc for now and in the future as well.  Looking forward to switching things up.  Cheers!

Well done, and congrats!

Kick ass. I'd like to take the plunge and go to being a 1 car family, so cheers to you. I'd be interested to hear a bit about your commutes and bike set up. I've been working on getting my bike set up for commuting. Added a bike rack, one panier and some fenders. I think I'll do my first bike commute home on Friday.

Thanks guys, I'm not badass yet but I'm working on it.  Baby steps right?

I don't know how long we'll be a one car family for but I think it would be an interesting experiment to conduct.  I thought my biggest hassle would be traveling for work via airline.  I've got a work trip scheduled for early April so I need to figure out how to get myself, luggage, and field gear out to the airport.  There's bus that I could take from here but it's 3 miles away.  However, I just discovered that there is a shuttle that will pick you up and take you to the bus station for $2.  This works out great for situations where a bike isn't a practical option.  So this car transaction is already forcing me to become more resourceful.  Although I'd gotten to the point where a wasn't driving on a daily basis and the car would sit sometimes for a week or two without being driven, it feels different knowing it's not parked in the garage waiting for me.

My commuter setup is a 10 year old steel road bike and a messenger bag.  I have a 35L backpack but I rarely need to carry that much stuff.  I've thought about going all in on a dedicated touring/commuter setup with panniers but I just haven't yet.  The idea would be to do some bikepacking on that as well but we'll see.  I figure I'll do a few supported tours first and see how it goes.

I'm in the danger zone with this car situation though.  The wife wants to run out and buy a brand new vehicle which would obviously set us back.  She's worried about the reliability of whatever we might get buy used from a stranger.  I know there is some element of risk but I'm not sure it justifies paying for a new car.  But is it me or do used car prices seem to be on the high side right now?  I figured 8k would get me something decent but I'm not seeing a lot of great options at the moment.  Lots of posts with prices above KBB.
