Combined my wife and I made about $73,000 from our teaching salaries. That number is for teaching the second semester of the 2012-13 academic year. We basically funneled all our salary into various 403b, 457 and IRA accounts. We cover our living expenses with 72T distributions and 457 withdrawals.
Anytime we take jobs now we try to save all our salary in retirement accounts. One thing I am very unbadassity at is funding taxable accounts. Next year, I'm going to open an index fund to establish a taxable account. I have $140 in stocks outside of my retirement accounts...weak!
