Final Number for 4.5 Months of Teaching...
« on: October 30, 2013, 06:42:10 PM »
Greetings Folks,

Last January I took a short-term teaching job to help out a neighboring district.  They needed a Spanish teacher to get them through the year, so I helped them out.  In a previous post, I mentioned that I hoped to save $25,000 from the job.  Well, the number turned out better than I anticipated; the grand total was $33,212 in savings.  Not bad for 4.5 months of teaching.

That said, I sure hated all that clown-driving before the sun came up!  You can read all about it here:  http://www.millionaireeducator.com/2013/07/how-i-saved-33000-by-teaching-45-months.html

So how much do you a month working as a Spanish teacher?

We plan on saving 100% of my salary next year when the house is paid off.

Good job.

On the Georgia payscale I make about $65,000 plus the district stipend.  This last job also had  extended day pay because we taught an extra 45 minutes a day.  Plus, there was a $1,000 signing bonus to teach at the school.  I'll take another job in a year or so.

Good luck working your plan.

So you were making just under $90k a year ($88,500ish) and managed to save 100% of it?

Were your other living expenses $0 the entire time?

Combined my wife and I made about $73,000 from our teaching salaries.  That number is for teaching the second semester of the 2012-13 academic year.  We basically funneled all our salary into various 403b, 457 and IRA accounts.  We cover our living expenses with 72T distributions and 457 withdrawals.

Anytime we take jobs now we try to save all our salary in retirement accounts.  One thing I am very unbadassity at is funding taxable accounts.  Next year, I'm going to open an index fund to establish a taxable account.  I have $140 in stocks outside of my retirement accounts...weak!
