Final Night at J.O.B. #2
« on: September 01, 2016, 01:35:04 PM »
This thread may not be best suited for the “badassity” section but I thought it fit here better than anywhere else. I originally was not planning on posting this on MMM as it is simply self-serving  but realized that this is the only place that I can post it without having to be concerned that I will upset or surprise anyone with the information below. Here goes:

Tonight is the last night at my second job that I have been working at for the past 2.5 years to pay off my student loans as quickly as possible. I have run the numbers and posted them below and I cannot wait to leave after clocking out at 2am tomorrow morning. I will finally be able to get back to a normal life with additional free time as well as additional resources to expedite my FIRE goals. It definitely has not been a lot of fun but with it almost all said and done I am so glad that I was able to stick with it to knock out this debt so quickly.

  • Total Shifts Worked - 507
  • Total Hours Worked - 2,341.75
  • AVG Hours/Week - 17.22
  • Total hours paid to sleep - 211.25*
  • Total wages for sleeping - $2,087.15

* This is a fun number to review. Our team takes a 40+/- minute long break every night at midnight. I use this precious time to slunk down in the only comfortable chair in the break room and take a power nap before returning back to work. Some of my naps have been longer than others but I estimate that I sleep roughly 22 minutes per break.

Well, in order for the MM community to rule on whether it was truly bad ass.... how much did you pay off?
Regardless, slugging out a 2nd job for 2.5 years is pretty bad ass - so it qualifies in my book!  Nice job!

Total amount paid off with interest will be just shy of $90k in 31 months. What's the verdict?

Definately badass, you were making 40$ish/hour? Well done my friend.

I wish! That is the total paid during my time at the second job. This amount includes my main job, dog sitting money, and other side hustles.

Wow that's just awesome. Paying off 90k in student loans in 31 months is definitely badass.  Also sticking to a night job like that isn't easy, so definitely badass there too.

Thanks. I'd definitely say that it got easier over time as my body got used to the lack of sleep. But that also could have been due to the copious amounts of coffee that I've drank over the same time period.

Kudos to you. Not many people would have the balls to do that to themselves to achieve a goal. Well done!

Thanks - Waking up this morning felt great even with only 4hrs of sleep! Knowing that I am done with the night gig and back to having more free time starting today is awesome.

Having the motivation and determination to continue working two jobs for 2 1/2 years is amazing!!  I wish more people had the drive to accomplish what you did.  I paid off my undergrad and post grad loans within months of graduating and my co-workers called me crazy, but I didn't even have to make huge sacrifices. Good work :)!

Thanks for the kind words.

It is amazing how time is relative. When I first started the night gig I had a three year plan and thought that it was doable. Six months in and I was dragging every night and drinking about 4+ cups of coffee before 9am. But now that I'm done it doesn't seem like I was there for 2.5 years. It definitely wasn't a lot of fun or a barrel of laughs but the guys I worked with were great and made the time more enjoyable and helped me keep going.

Congrats Boyerbt!

Two very important questions remain:
1) To add to your initial statistics, the total amount of gallons of coffee you drank during night shifts?
2) What was the actual job?

I worked night shifts for two years (one week every three weeks) and kind of enjoyed it... just driving home in the morning was dangerous sometimes, dozing off in morning traffic jams...

1) unsure as it was sporadic if I drank coffee there or not.
2) I worked overnights at a Home Depot.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
