I tend to just go home when I'm done with my last patient, I act like the school bell has rung and I get the heck out of dodge like my hair is on fire.
The thing is, I'm an hourly employee and my union guarantees that I am paid until 6:00 pm everyday. If I work more than 10 hours I get overtime but if I leave early I just get my pay reduced. (voluntarily)
Since there is no end of work to be done (always supplies to be put away, instruments to sterilize, drawers to organize, charts to file etc.) I can just stay until 6:00 everyday doing whatever busywork needs doing and I can still earn overtime on those days that I am staying late to finish up direct patient care.
I figure this will increase my annual earnings by about $1,100 a year, and all I really ever used to "do" with that early release time is surf the internet or watch TV or maybe clean the house a bit. All stuff that can be done any other time.
