Fall leaves

I thought I would share this because my neighbor's thought it was pretty "badass" and it's rather appropriate for this time of year.

I live in a neighborhood with a lot of folks who rather "enjoy" blowing/raking their leaves and shoving them all in a bag for the garbage man to pick up. Well, since I am always looking for extra leaves for composting and feeding the lawn with, I sent a neighborhood email telling folks I would come get their bags of leaves for free and put them to good use. I had a huge response and ended up having to tell some folks I couldn't come get their leaves.

I ended up with about 30 bags of leaves all of which went into my compost bin and spread out across a very large yard and mowed into the grass. In case you are wondering mulch mowing leaves into your lawn is  a great way to increase the organic matter in your soil and promote a very healthy lawn. It's wonderful soil microbe food. Plus it's free and I kept 30 bags of useful leaves out of the landfill.

Oh and I used my bike with bike trailer to transport the leaves.

Seriously badass.   You beat me.  I only collected 7 bags of leaves from my neighbours for my garden plot.  I don't understand why anyone strips their garden from all this free lawn nutrition and deprives all the creatures that need to hibernate a place to make it through the winter.  All those butterflies that appear first thing in the spring and lift our spirits are hiding in the leaves for your spring joy.

Neighbours when I was a kid had 4 huge maple(?) trees in their front yard and every autumn the leaves would cover their front garden, ours plus a couple of hundred metres of road too.

We used to rake them into gigantic piles and yes also use them for compost, amongst other things little boys like to do with a pile of leaves, a bike and a jump. (Hint: it never works out like it does in the movies. Don't even bother trying!)
