Epic Bicycle Climb
« on: April 05, 2018, 12:00:00 AM »
I’m on vacation in Maui, Hawaii. I just completed a dream of mine. I bicycled up Mt Haleakala in Maui. The ride started at sea level and ends at 10,023 ft in elevation in 35 miles. It’s considered the longest paved climb in the world. Around the 5200ft mark my legs were saying no. I pushed on till around 8000ft when I felt my legs starting to cramp. Hell no I'm not going to stop now only 2000ft more. I found the will power and pushed on to the top. It was such a great feeling to get my picture in front of the 10023ft elevation sign. I guess all my training paid off. So stoked..

Wow! Very impressive.

What was your training regimen like leading up to conquering that beast?

The ride down was sooo fun. Just think 35 miles and you don’t have to pedal well maybe one place for about 1/8 mile. I earned those beers and pizza at the end.  Suffering on the way up = Having a blast on the downhill.

A lot of trainer miles indoor using  Zwift. I wish I could of gotten outside more but it kept snowing here in Pa. I did a couple 4000ft climbing rides in Feb and March outside.

I couldn't even imagine doing something like this.  Now what are you going to do to top it?

I’m not sure I could top it. It does rank 10 in the world as one of the hardest bike climbs. I guess I could try to hit the other 9. Ouch...

Nice. I just recently splurged on an auto-trainer and will be getting some workouts in via Zwift. Not the most mustachian decision on my end, but my work day can be long (12 hour shifts), so it'll be nice to get in some additional rides and structured workouts regardless of the time of day.

What was your speed back down like? I imagine having to stop and replace brake pads.

The downhill was a blast. I think I averaged 35+. The cars going down did slow me down a bit. I did have a oh shit moment on one corner. I was going into it a little hot and locked up the back tire twice. I almost ran into the back of a mini van.

I don't think the pixels are there to zoom in on.

Congrats on the climb.

That's a helluva climb! I've heard of people having to give up because the weather closed in on them towards the top, which would really suck.

What gearing were you using?

A guy I know just went to a single chainring setup with some insane rear cogs. I could climb Everest on this thing:

I rented the bike.  It had 34 upfront and a cassette with a 32on back. Normally a 28 out back would work on this climb but your legs get tired because of the lengrh of the climb.  The average is about 5.8%. Two places go above 10% only for about  1/4 mile each.

Yeah, 34x32 is good. I'd love to try that climb one day.
