Engagement Ring - MMM Style
« on: August 04, 2017, 09:22:47 AM »
2B1S is finally proposing to SO.

2B1S does not believe in supporting the diamond industry.

2B1S spent a year researching alternatives and had this ring ordered/made a few weeks ago.

I'll update this thread when I pop the question =D

That is beautiful! I don't have a diamond in my ring either. DH got it off of an awesome etsy website and it is my favorite thing!

That is an AMAZING looking ring! I'll have to keep this idea in mind.

My strategy was somewhat different when buying a ring. You've heard the saying in engineering "Good, fast, cheap, pick two"? Well, for her it was:

  • High quality
  • Name brand
  • Cheap

And she wanted all three. :/

A custom ring from a local Jeweler would have been much cheaper than name brand and still high quality. A ring from Harry Winston or Tiffany would have been expensive. And we certainly could have gotten a much less impressive ring from a name brand, but, well, that would be less impressive. :D

eBay to the rescue. Since diamonds are pretty much a commodity, the name brand requirement carries little value in the resale market. Wife didn't care that she got a used ring so long as it met all three requirements above.

I still maintain diamonds are worthless and we'd have been better off not to spend anything on one, but wife doesn't care about logic when it came to an engagement ring. That wasn't the hill I was going to die on. And she's super-frugal in other ways--she's probably saved me more money than the ring cost since I met here--so I was fine with it.

2. Name brand
I didn't even know there were name brand rings! Like, who can tell anyway? It's not like they've got a brand name emblazoned on them.

But 2b1s, that ring is beautiful!

That's fantastic. I spent only slightly less on a .45 ct, excellent cut, VVS2, F color diamond with all the responsible sourcing certs in a knotwork palladium ring. About 1900 and it didn't come with an army of small stones like yours does!

Palladium is a great metal that jewelers don't like because it's a PITA to work with, but I obviously went for smaller stone, more economical band, in part because my SO would be afraid to wear something quite as dazzling as your ring. She said I should spend 300 bucks on a ring if I bought one, but, eh, the ring was a rare thing I didn't want to save on - we wouldn't have a lavish wedding anyway.

Good luck! Planning the 12th or 13th myself. :)

I am so excited for you! I have a moissy engagement ring and I absolutely love it! It sparkes more than a diamond, it's conflict free and just specular in general.

I bought mine used from this website:

www.diamondbistro.com

I included it just in case you would like to buy anniversary band or something in the future.

You'll have to tell us the proposal story :)

Did you get the band from C&C as well? I'd love to see a photo of the actual ring. Moissanite is the way I want to go when the time comes.

Beautiful! My sister got engaged 3 years ago, and wanted a sizeable ring. I was so excited to tell her about moissanite. When spouse and I got married 9 years ago, I would have loved a moissanite ring, but back then, it wasn't nearly as high quality as today's stones.

Congratulations! That ring is absolutely stunning! It is too bad that moissanite is hard to come by in the Netherlands last time I checked. I like glitter, but diamonds are artificially overpriced (not to mention horrendous work conditions for the miners) and I like it that moissanite is sciencey. Well done you!

Wow, nice ring.

I also MMM'd my ring.  I found a ring that was a return due to a proposal rejection.  75% off!

Love it. Coming from a geologist, diamonds are overrated and way overpriced. Moissanite and cubic zirconia are the way to go! Cheaper, very close in appearance, great quality and socially responsible!

Congratulations OP that's great news!

It's the scariest question you'll ever have to ask (after asking her pa for permission, that was much scarier).

One thing I would suggest to anyone else looking is to consider getting one custom made. It sounds scary and expensive but my partner also didn't want diamonds for ethical reasons and I got her a beautiful ring made for around half the price that it's equivalent would cost in a regular jewlery shop, and she knows it's unique, and she still gets compliments on it to this day.
