In my case, the car ran fine, but I needed to have around $800 or so of work done on it if i was going to be able to continue driving it safely. I added that amount to the average I spent for routine maintenance over the last few years, added insurance, and then ran the numbers. I figured that (roughly), I could still spend something like $30/week on Uber rides for the next year and still come out ahead. And I'll probably never even come anywhere close to that, so it ends up being a pretty good deal. I'm lucky because my employer has a deal with our city to help alleviate traffic downtown, the result of which is that I get a free bus pass to use for trips to and from work. Good stuff.
