Do you run 5k's?
« on: December 23, 2014, 10:01:57 PM »
If so, what's your age and how fast?

I'm mid-30s and logged a sub 28 the other day.  I swear I ran this under 20 when I was a teenager but I've put on a few pounds since then

I ran a 17:13 back in high school. I haven't really been keeping up on my running as well as I would like though...

I've only run a 5K once, last year, when I was 36.  Actually won the women's division (it was a small race) with a 23:40.  Don't know that I'll ever beat that time, since I haven't been very motivated to do speed workouts with any regularity.

Trying to work my way up to being able to do one, would be lucky to get under 30min at the moment. Give it time and persistence and I'll post a decent time, 20min is a far off dream.

It's mind blowing that the world record is 12:37

For a year now I've gotten a few team members running 5K over lunch (3 days a week). We started at >35 min with walking breaks and are now in the ~26 min range. Hoping to get sub 25 next year.

The group dynamic really helps motivate when the weather/work-deliverables discourage running.

This. Was quite proud of my 32-minute-ish time a few years ago, but it's not something I consider fun.

In other news, I did a 5k row in 22:15. That was rough.

The wife and I are both runners, and we pretty much run at exactly the same speed.  Up at 4:15 most mornings to get miles in together before she works.  We're both 27.

To just go out and run a 5k, somewhere in the low 17:20 range.

If we do speed and train for it, 16:40ish or better depending on how hard and often we do track workouts.

We're pretty fortunate to have found each other.

Am 32, and am in about 21 minute 5k shape. Focusing more on the longer stuff right now (triathlons and half marathons), but I suspect I could shave a few minutes off it if I focused on speed work.

Been running about 4 years, has been a pretty steady decline from my first 5k of ~28 minutes....

When I was 20, I ran a 5K in 19:50.  I didn't run another race for 30 years.  Now that I'm 51, my best recent time is 24:48.  I would love to do another sub-20, but it probably won't happen.  For now, my goal is sub-24.

I "run" up to Marathons.  I quote that because I also walk a lot during races.  So pretty damn slow for a reasonably in shape 32 year old.  Need the big races to motivate me to do my training - not on a zen enough plane yet to go out and run 5 miles just for fun.

I run a 5k in about 25-26 minutes, but that's in deep sand on the beach. On more running-friendly surfaces, it's about 23-24 minutes.

i'm very impressed with some of the times.  Fitness is such a huge part of being successful and beyond lifting and cross fit, I'm working in some more running work (though in general it will largely keep an orthopedist employed later in life).

From lifting weights, I'm probably a lot heavier than many of the runners on here at well over 240 pounds.  I doubt I could ever put in a sub 20 again unless I lost about 50 pounds of muscle mass, but running below 25 min is a goal I think I could attain this spring.  Maybe I'll work to make that happen.

For now, I was pretty happy to run something with a 27 handle on it.  Those in your 50s (or any age really) running a sub 20 min 5k is truly amazing.  Kudos to you on that dedication that I know it requires to achieve that level of athleticism.

18:30 this summer (when I was 25).  18:50 on Thanksgiving (age 26).  Going to try to break 18 in 2015.  Need to do more speedwork!

This summer I ran a lap of Central Park in 42 minutes. That's just under 10k, so about 21 minutes for each of two back-to-back 5k's with some big hills at 43 years old.

At my best I ran a 16:09.  That was 8 years ago in college.  I don't even want to know what I could run now, but I am trying to get back into it with the goal of an 8k race in April.

I found it hard to be fit , and I lift weights.  I'm about 150 and 5'9" female.  So I run for time, not speed. At a 6.0 pace thats 30 minutes for 5k.

Every 10 lbs lost or gained adds or subtracts 20 seconds PER MILE to your 5k time. The fastest 5k time on record is something like 12 minutes.

I am 46.5, started running 4.5 years ago, couldn't "run" faster than a 10 minute mile when I started and can now run a 5k in 24:29 when I try. Sadly, I am faster that most of the apathetic female high school athletes in my town. Of my 4 kids, only my youngest, at 12, can beat my time. She has only done that once.

I stopped running those charity 5Ks a while ago when the entrance fee to challenge level made it unattractive.  I did a half marathon last year and have gotten in such bad shape that I need to start training for a half marathon next year to get back into it.  Long term goal is to get into marathon shape.

22:50  at age 61.   I think I can get down to 22:00.

Paying $25 to run a 5k is a bit much, especially when I can run for free.  I only run 2 or 3 official races a year and try to make it either a local race or a cause I genuinely support.

You might want to search for running clubs in your area.  In my hometown, they had club runs/races once a week that were $0.50 to enter.  They were on a measured course and timed, but nothing really official (no road blockage or anything).  We would run them in high school between track and cross country seasons, so even though only 15-20 people would show up, the winning time would still be around 17 minutes.

Was working down into the low 20's last spring with a 10k around 50, achilles injury stopped all running over the summer & most of fall.  Getting back to running last few months, feeling much better than I expected.  Did my first 7 mile run Friday, held 9:30/mile at my Long Slow Distance heart rate, felt really good about being able to still do that much.

The few 5k's I have looked at in the past years were stupid expensive to enter, +30$ even with early registration.  Will have to see in any locals host 0.5$ events - that sounds awesome.

Basic running goal is to get solidly under 20 then work on a sub 40-10k.  After that we will see, not sure I have the time to properly get into longer distances.

Running is great, especially with a baby stroller while they're sleeping and the wife gets a break. I log a bunch of miles during the summer when school is not in session. While I don't usually run 5k's, per se, my last one was with a stroller at 23:32.

At age 33, I expect with some speed work, I might push the envelope at 21 minutes flat without a stroller. I do an annual 15k in Jacksonville, FL in about 1:11:00. It's a great race.

To the older runners out there, I, too, aspire to be like you--in shape enough to run regularly and kick some dust in some young guys' faces. Well done!

At age 53 ran a PR of 23:35.  We'll see what happens in 2015 when I turn 57 in June and will have been able to run more consistently.

I'm a slow runner (12-13 minute/mile pace) using the Galloway run/walk method.  I could probably do a 5K in the mid-30's if I bothered to time one of my faster runs.  I don't normally do official 5K races though.  For my racing dollar, I'd rather do half marathons and marathons.  Fewer dollars per mile that way. :)

I have a (free) half marathon in two weeks, and three full marathons on the calendar for 2015 already.

I'm a 58 year old woman.  I started racing again in the last few years, after about 18 years of only occasional running. My only 5k last year was 25:38 on a hilly course. I ran a 23:54 two years ago, and 22:04 decades ago!
Running is part of my strategy to keep fit, keep my weight in the normal range, and hopefully have fewer medical expenses in retirement.
I got a new book by Joe Friel, Fast After 50, for Christmas, and it is inspiring me to think I can do better!  So, my New Year's Resolution is to follow a logical plan in improve my speed in 2015.
I'm also distressed at the cost of races, I paid for 4 last year, whereas when I was younger (early 30's), I'd race every weekend.  For me the races provide a motivation to improve, it's easy to slack off if there's no competition.

I'm 54 and have been doing one 5K a year for 5 years now. 25-26 minute range. I cycle a lot, but my only "run" training is to run 2.5K once a month or so. Maybe twice the week before the race!

I have no desire to run any farther... that's what bicycles are for!

25 yrs old, can run 5k in about 40min, just over 50 for a mountain run. Started this spring, aiming to run sub-30 and finish a mountain run at an intermediate pace (6-8 min/km) this year.

Did a 5k a few days ago at around 32 min... did not want to push it. Took a day off to see if any of my lower limbs were cranky, but everything seemed good. My wife and I just got back a few minutes ago  almost 30 min on the button. By the time my half marathon rolls around (4 months away) I think its perfect reasonable I should be sub-25  minutes. Felt really good today, though with the air at right around the freezing mark, it's a bit hard on the lungs.

I haven't run a 5k in a few years, but I'd guess a finish time of ~ 21 minutes (female, age 30).  I'd like to get to sub-20, but I have never pushed myself hard enough with speedwork.  I'm better at the long distance stuff.

I used to race walk 5k races with my mom.  I finished one in 34 minutes, and oh man did that hurt.  But I won!

I'm 28 this year. Last June I ran a 5k with my 54yr/old Mom. I ran a 20:58, she ran a 22:02.

She's a top notch runner in the local Seattle area for her age.

In high school I ran a 17:13, but that was training at 40+ miles per week.

Age 36
PR's
5k: 21:10 (5k split on 1/1/15)
10k: 42:27 (1/1/15)
10 mile: 1:13:45 (10M split 11/16/14)
1/2 mar: 1:36:22 (11/16/14)

I only do a standalone 5k once a year if that.  Usually the distance is folded into longer race splits or duathlons.

One added note: I'm really happy I killed my gym membership and am running outside this winter.  Nothing makes you feel more like a badass then going on a long subzero run in multiple layers.

Ran a 36:36 10km in November (PB at the age of 28), haven't run a 5km in years, but suspect I'd come in around 17:45. Ran a 1:26 for a half marathon in October in the rain on a hilly course. Going for my Boston Marathon qualifier in June (need a 3:05, aiming to break 3 hours). Wish me luck!

When I first looked up the qualifying times for "middle aged males" my jaw hit the ground, 3:05 is a like 7min/mile.

This year I'm planning to focus more on speed work and overall strength. I did my first marathon last fall, which was a good achievement but the training was definitely rough on my body.  Though admittedly I was working too much at the time and not prioritizing a well rounded training plan.

Distance has always been more of my thing though, slow and steady, so this will be a good out of my comfort zone challenge.  Right now I'm just trying to get back into a routine after being a major slacker at the end of 2014, then I will start getting serious about speed work. My initial goal is sub 25:30, hopefully before June.
