DIY Pixie cut!
« on: March 18, 2018, 11:13:16 AM »
I’ve been cutting my long hair at home for a few years,  but as I have been getting older, a short cut works better for me.

I wasn’t brave enough to DIY a pixie myself, so I eased into it with a short bob cut by a hairdresser.  Lived with it a few months and had it cut progressively shorter.  6 months later, I was ready for a pixie.

After one so-so pixie cut by my hairdresser, I bit the bullet!  I needed a no-brainer cut for my thick straight, graying hair.  YouTube and some bloggers gave me the courage to go for it.

I bought a $27 WAHL home clipper set and a $13 two inch clipper guard.  I trimmed everything with the 2 inch guard, then did the sides and back with the 3/8” guard.  I stand in the shower stall to contain the hair and vacuum it and myself before taking a shower.  Takes about 10 minutes!

Spent the same amount for the clipper, etc as I did for a haircut.  The clipper should last for about 5 years.

I like the cut better than anything my hairdressers ever did.  A dab of styling wax and I am good to go. It’s slightly edgy and fun.

(If you click on the pic, it will show a larger image in the correct orientation.)

Thanks, All!

When I think of all the fancy cutting techniques hairdressers have used on my thick hair, I really have to laugh.  It works so much better this way.

Great cut! I'm all about cutting and styling hair at home. It's saved me a few thousand dollars over the years. Though I guess it's easier being a bald dude... just run the clippers over my head and sulk about it.

Wow, that is great.  I also had long hair, half way down my back, and got it cut short.  I have hesitated to cut it myself, because it is so much trickier to do the back where I am going by feel and the mirror.  I trim my own bangs so I only go to the hairdressers when I need the full trim.

Could you please post the youtube videos you found?  And maybe a picutre of the back of your head if you can manage to take that picture?

Thanks so much.

What a cute haircut! Congratulations. Thanks for mentioning the 2" guard--that was the part I didn't know about--I can cut guys' hair using the guards, but couldn't figure out how to do a pixie on myself that wouldn't be too short and look like a guy's haircut. For now, I'm going with my usual short bob, but really want to try a pixie.

Well done! It looks great on you!

I've been itching to do my own haircut, but I've been too chicken to go through with it. This is great inspiration!

Oh man, I've had a pixie for years and have always been too afraid to cut it myself. Yours looks really nice.

You are an inspiration.

I used to have long hair and could cut it myself.  Now my cut is almost a pixie cut, and I am going to a hairdresser for it.  I am taking your picture in for next time and asking for that cut.  If it looks good I am switching to doing it myself.

I've googled pixie cuts and not found much useful.  What site did you find helpful?

Sorry, I forgot to get notifications of replies to my post!

Here’s the simplest video to show how I cut my hair, though she got a bit of help from a friend:

The only thing I do differently is cut the top of my hair with the 2 inch clipper guard.
