Ditched the second car
« on: October 22, 2012, 09:00:26 AM »
I finally got rid of my car.  My wife and I now share one car.

For the last few months, I've been toying with the idea of getting rid of my car.  I've been driving less and biking more, but would still wuss out and use the car whenever I could come up with an excuse.  Last month my mother in-law got into a car accident.  Everyone is fine, but the car was totaled.  I was able to sell my old car to her and I've been down to 1 car for a little over a week.

So far so good.  I've had to bike more, and I've done some car pooling with my wife as well.  I can't make the extremely wussy-pants excuses that I used to.

The reactions at work range from "That's awesome!" to "You're insane", depending on how close they are to me on the Wheaton scale.  My typical response to the detractors is "fifty years ago, practically every family only had one car".  They made it work then with a little fore-thought and I can do it now.

I'm looking forward to the huge savings and the forced badassity of not having a car (especially bike commuting in February).

…with a little fore-thought…

Amazing how much of this process is just a little forethought. :)

Good work!

Congratulations! I'm scheming over how to do this, too.

Congrats! We did the same thing last week. I'm not sure why we didn't do it sooner.
